Concept Map – Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

CONCEPT MAP FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION ? Student's copy Directions: KAGAN says.....Unscramble the Puzzle!! Around the titles, select the "a" card that is the correct description of the process in the title. Glue them in place. Do this for all of the cards and the pictures. Note: Each column should have an "a" through "f", including the correct pictures. Once you assemble your concept map, on the bottom of the Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration columns, write the chemical equations for each process. Highlight each equation in a different color. *You don't need to cut out the "titles" since they are already on the concept map.

a. Captures energy from sun to make food (glucose)

a. Both equations are opposites of each other

a. A process where cells break down food molecules (sugar) and release the energy they contain

a. It's a way for cells to obtain energy from sugar in the absence of oxygen. There are 2 kinds. e. The reactants of photosynthesis are H2O and CO2. The products are oxygen, ATP, & glucose (C6H12O6)

b. Alcoholic Fermentation: occurs in single-celled organisms and produces alcohol and CO2 as products. b. The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration.

b. It occurs in leaves (in an organelle called chloroplasts)

b. Cellular respiration has two stages. It starts in the cytoplasm and initially does not require oxygen. e. Products of cellular respiration include ATP, H2O and CO2 Reactants of cell respiration are glucose and oxygen.

c. Leaves are green because they have a pigment called chlorophyll.

c. Autotrophs and heterotrophs can perform cellular respiration

c. Lactic Acid Fermentation: occurs in muscles when there is not enough oxygen to perform an activity

c. 1st stage of cellular respiration: Breaks down sugar. Takes place in the cytoplasm. f. Sign of tired muscle

d. 2nd stage: Releases large amounts of ATP (energy). Takes place in the mitochondria. Requires oxygen!! d. Fermentation takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. It only happens in the absence of oxygen.

d. Only autotrophs have photosynthesis. Autotrophs and heterotrophs have cellular respiration d. Autotrophs are organisms that can perform photosynthesis

f. Sweet, sweet Chloroplast!

e. Wine

f. "The Mighty Mitochondria"

e. "Opposite of each other"

f. "Linking photosynthesis to cellular respiration"
