Coffee Bar To Open at D. H. Hill

O n Monday, March 25, at 10:00 A.M., the Hill of Beans Coffee Bar Grand Opening ceremony will take place at the D. H. Hill Library. There will be speakers, free cups of Seattle's Best coffee, a ribbon-cutting, and prizes.

On display at the coffee bar and available at opening-day prices will be Hill of Beans insulated, library-safe coffee mugs, colorful T-shirts, and buy-10-get-1-coffee-free punch cards. Items on the menu will include premium snacks and beverages, such as expressos, lattes, specialty coffees, tea, fruit juice, fruit, bagels, biscotti, and muffins.

The Libraries, University Dining, and the NCSU Parents and Families Association have worked together over the past two years to bring a library coffee bar to the NC State community. The Grand Opening will celebrate the two-year effort and everyone on campus, from coffee-lovers to hungry snackers, is invited.

Provost Stuart Cooper will be a speaker at the Grand Opening, as well as Tom Stafford, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. Beverly Wooten Stutts will also be there. Stutts, when a student member of the University Library Com-

mittee at NCSU, first suggested that NC State's twenty-fourhour D. H. Hill Library needed its own coffee bar. She will describe the genesis of her idea and how it attracted support, especially from the Parents and Families Association. Susan Nutter, vice provost and director of Libraries, will serve as master of ceremonies. From March 25 through March 29 (Monday through Friday), coupons giving 10 percent off the price of a cup of coffee will be honored at the Hill of Beans Coffee Bar. Coupons will appear in the Technician on March 18, 20, and 22. A purchase at the Hill of Beans Coffee Bar may translate into an educational contribution. A portion of the proceeds will be used to create a scholarship fund for NC State students. Seattle's Best Coffee was chosen as the coffee supplier of choice after careful taste tests and research into its main products. The company offers premium, bird friendly, and organic coffees. Seattle's Best buys, roasts, and sells strictly graded beans considered to be in the top 2 percent of arabica coffees. Packages of Seattle's Best coffees, ready for home brewing or gifts, will also be on sale at the Hill of Beans Coffee Bar.

Howard Besser To Speak at 2002 I. T. Littleton Seminar

H oward Besser, associate professor at UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies, will speak at the 2002 I. T. Littleton Seminar. Besser will discuss one of his major research topics, the social effects of information technologies. He has written extensively on this topic from such perspectives as the

effects of information technologies on cultural heritage institutions, policies, and consumers and the public. Besser's research interests also include digital libraries, multimedia databases, and teaching with technology.

The I. T. Littleton Seminar began in 1987 to honor retiring library director I. T. Littleton. In 1999 it

Contributors: Jennifer O'Brien Roper (Cataloging), Nancy Vaupel (Scholarly Communication and External Relations), and Joe Williams (Veterinary Medical Library).

became an annual event held each spring semester to address major library issues, providing diverse perspectives and expert opinions.

The 2002 I. T. Littleton Seminar will be held on April 2 at 2:30 P.M. in the Erdahl-Cloyd Theater, D. H. Hill Library. A reception will follow. The seminar is free and open to the entire NC State

community, the TRLN communities, and library colleagues in North Carolina. If you plan to attend, please call Jennifer O'Brien Roper at ext. 5-6329 or send an electronic-mail message to jennifer_ roper@ncsu.edu. This will help the library plan for the reception.

Veterinary Medical Library Services Feature PDA Resources

N orth Carolina State University's Veterinary Medical Library (VML) now delivers critical library resources and services to the palm of a hand. The library has created a new PDA Resources Web page that provides library information accessible by PDA (Personal Data Assistant). PDA users with Internet access can use this Web page to search the NCSU Libraries' online catalog, request books and articles through interlibrary loan, submit questions to reference librarians, renew borrowed library materials, and more. The PDA Resources Web page is designed to support the College of Veterinary Medicine's (CVM) new Mobile Computing Initiative, which supplies third-year veterinary students and teaching faculty with wireless-enabled PDAs. Students are using the PDAs to access drug formulary data and record information during clinical rounds. College faculty have begun to take advantage of the PDA's "instant polling" capabilities. Instructors can gauge student comprehension during a lecture by conducting quick, anonymous multiple-choice quizzes. To support these and other activities, library staff meet

with CVM students and faculty to seek out relevant clinical and classroom PDA applications.

In addition to creating and maintaining the PDA Resources Web page, the VML has organized a PDA Users Group for all interested third-year students and faculty. The Users Group provides PDA users with a chance to ask questions and share their knowledge in an informal setting. Six new "syncing stations" will also be made available in the library's computer lab this semester, allowing students to synchronize the information from their PDAs with documents in their personal Unity file space. The VML's PDA Resources Web page can be viewed at . Please direct questions and comments to Joe Williams, NCSU Libraries Fellow, by sending an electronic-mail message to Joe_Williams@ncsu.edu or by calling ext. 3-0002. For information on the College of Veterinary Medicine's Mobile Computing Initiative, please visit its Web page at http:// cvm.ncsu.edu/mobilecomp/.
