[Pages:13]FAQs For the New ODN

Why has the Digital Replica Edition changed?

Answer: The programming languages used on the internet are constantly being upgraded to safeguard our personal information with better security and to improve the quality of the experience. The Digital Replica Edition was originally developed in Flash, a technology and programming language that is being phased out for performance and security reasons. It is being replaced by a HTML5. For more technical information Google Flash vs. HTML5.

HMTL5 offers a number of technical and feature advantages over the old Flash based technology, especially around security and performance but also with device compatibility across Desktop, Tablet & Mobile devices

Device and Performance Issues

The new version doesn't work on my tablet?

Answer: If you have an older tablet or device, sorry to say this is the way of the internet world these days. It's a constant battle to keep up with the changes. Almost all software is being constantly upgraded to stay current with ever changing technology. No different then the changes we have seen in cars over the last 50 years, accept with software it was the last 5 years.

Issues with takeover ads on iPhone 6

Answer: This issue could be a couple of different issues.

When I try to access the replica edition a full screen ad appears and I can't close it. When I try to, I am taken to the app store or to another site.

We have verified that there is a malicious ad network injecting ads that take over the entire screen before the eEdition application loads. Trying to close the ad results in users being directed to the iOS apps store or other unrelated websites. We apologize for this inconvenience and this is an issue that plagues other mobile web application providers as well. This is not the experience we intended and we are working with our

advertising technology providers to eliminate this issue as quickly as possible. It seems to be currently limited to iOS devices, especially iPhone 6 users, but that may change with time.

TOC and Left rail ad are in the way and I can't close it

This may be an issue with the left rail ad not closing quickly and the reader can't see the "X" to close the rail. We've tried to make that X as prominent as possible. We will continue to test this issue to find a solution as soon as possible.

I am having problems viewing the responsive site on iPad?

When readers may be experiencing issues with their tablet devices, particularly iPads, the first step they should use to troubleshoot is to close out unused open applications operating in the background and then refresh the page in the browser. That may solve the problem.

On iPads, background apps are not supposed to consume any CPU or memory resources but often do so. This may be helpful to remedy rapid battery depletion and slow application/web browser performance in other apps as well.

If I have a problem with the new Windows 10 with the Edge Browser what information does Olive Support provide? Answer: Windows 10 and the Edge browser have recently been released. In troubleshooting any reported issues, the first step would be to confirm that Edge browser version 20.10240.x.x (or higher) is installed and if not, to have the customer upgrade. Some may be using beta versions, which we do not claim to support.

After that, determine what the device resources meet the specifications of the OS

? Processor:1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC ? RAM:2 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit and 64-bit (4 GB recommended) ? Hard disk space:16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS ? Graphics card:DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver ? Display: minimum 800x600 ? Internet Connectivity: Broadband (256 kbps sustained or greater)

Capturing all this information will help any troubleshooting process and may reveal the root cause of the issue. If the computer is older or under-resourced, closing other open programs may help free resources and improve performance.

Small Devices Missing the Top Screen Toolbar Question: Some small devices missing the top screen toolbar - on an iPod Touch, and other `small' devices, the top of the screen tool bar disappears and it doesn't return.

Answer: This is a known bug that we (Olive Development) are developing a fix for. It was initially fixed for iPhone6, but R&D is working to make sure it fixes all small devices and, once they're satisfied with the fix, they will implement it in our templates and apply the fix to the ODN sites.

The new software keeps crashing or is very slow on my tablet. Answer: Most of these issues seem to be resolved by downloading the latest version updates of your devise's operating system software. Months of testing went into this software before it was launched. Because of the speed of change in technology today the responsibility of having the most current software is with the devise owner. This could also be attributed to numerous apps running in the background of the device.

Why won't the new eEdition load on my Kindle Fire Answer: The older Kindle fires had a default web browser (Silk) that doesn't work well with many different web applications including the new ODN sites. Kindle's Silk browser does not always work well with fully compliant HTML5 sites. We also tested a Kindle Fire HD (about two years old) and the ODN site performed better there.

Older PC issues - Browsers e.g.: Windows VISTA with IE9 Question: When I open an email on my Windows Vista with IE9 browser, it opens in the old version (ODE).

Answer: Until all browsers are HTML 5 compliant, the old replica version, ODE, will remain as the back-up application and there should be an automatic re-direct to that old replica if your browser does not support HTML 5. Eventually (est. late 2016) that redirect will be going away so please upgrade your browser as soon as possible to the most current version.

Samsung S6 Native Browser ? How to Clear the Cache Question: How do I clear the cache in my Samsung S6 Native Browser?

Answer: The best way to determine how to clear their cache is to search the internet for "How do I clear my cache on my {mobile device} {browser type}?" (For example, "How do I clear my cache on my Samsung S6 native browser?")

Viewing Issues ? Clearing Cache ? Cookies & JavaScript ? Security Settings

When a reader is having general problems viewing the e-edition Answer:

Please have your subscriber check these things:

- Please clear your browser cache and reload (try again). It's possible you have cached something corrupt/broken that is causing the problem and a simple refresh may resolve the issue.

- Make sure your browser has cookies and JavaScript enabled

- Make sure your browser does not have security settings set higher than typical defaults. This may include having to add the domain "" as a "trusted site"

- Make sure your computer is free of viruses and malware ? be sure to run your antivirus/anti malware software checks on a periodic basis. Conversely, if your antivirus applications run continuously, this can sometimes impact the performance of the eEdition application.

- Try disabling any unused browser add-ons and see if perhaps one of those is interfering with the ODN's operation.

Why is ODE Being Served versus ODN Answer: This may happen for many different reasons. Some identified above and others may include:

? If the reader accesses the eEdition via bookmarks (regardless of device), It will bring up the ODE or OMV

4

? If the reader is using a non-HTML5 compatible browser (e.g.: IE9) it will default to the old ODE (the new ODN requires an HTML5 compatible browser) Browser Cache Clearing Answer: It's possible your subscribers have cached something corrupt and that is causing problems. Also, some users may need to clear their local browser cache to make sure they're not seeing any old incompatible code. So, please have users experiencing problems clear their browser cache, restart their browsers, and try again. The best way to determine how to clear their cache is to search the internet for "How do I clear my cache on my {mobile device} {browser type}?" (For example, "How do I clear my cache on my Samsung S6 native browser?")

How to Print Crosswords, Other Games & Articles

How do I print crosswords or other games? There are two ways to print the crossword. Option 1) Print from the article view: Double click on the crossword puzzle to open it in article view and then you can use the print icon from that page. Option 2) Crop it out of the page. Navigate to the page where the crossword is located. In the menu bar, at the top of the screen on desktop or under the expanding hamburger menu on tablet and mobile devices, mouse over the "Download" icon (sometimes labeled "DL" it is the square with an arrow pointing into it). Hovering over it shows a dropdown menu and the second to the bottom option should be PDF Crop.

5

Choose PDF crop and a new window opens showing the page greyed back with a window over it, highlighting some part of the page. Drag that window over the crossword. You can stretch it or shrink it by clicking and dragging the edges and corners of the box.

When you have it positioned correctly, click the "Get PDF" button in the lower right of the page.

6

The cropped area of that page will download to your desktop in a PDF document format. Open your PDF and print it from there as you would any other PDF document.

It seems like a lot of steps but it really is the easiest way to clip and print items from the paper.

Problems printing Crossword Puzzles: Issue #1 ?Prints on multiple pages Answer: Olive Support added a check for the size of the crossword image. This means that if an image entity (like the crossword or another puzzle) is bigger than the page, the user will be prompted with a popup message and asked if they would like to resize the image to fit 1 page.

Crossword Puzzle Printing Issue #2 ? Did Not Bring Up The Crossword I double-clicked on the crossword but it brought up only the Sudoku puzzle.

Answer: More than likely the e-edition was republished to fix a correction. Because editions are globally cached, when a republish occurs there will be a brief period (usually no more than 10 minutes) when the old cached data and the new data don't quite mesh. When a republish happens the reader will need to clear their local browser cache as well.

Single Article Printing Question: How do I print just what I want from the digital edition? A travel piece or recipe, etc. that one might clip from the actual paper. The whole page is too much for 8 1/2 by 11 paper even in landscape. Usually the 4 or 5 columns in the paper print as 3 and a half. How do I print?

Answer: There are two methods used to print a single article.

The first is to double click on the headline or body of the article you wish to print. This should bring up the complete article in a text based view called "Article View". While in Article View, select the print button from the top menu. This will allow you to print the article to the device of your choice.

The other option is to use the PDF crop function described in the "how to print the crossword Q&A" item.

Page and Section Navigation

Page Turning Question: How do I flip the pages? Answer: There is an arrow button near the bottom right of the screen that advances the pages. There is also an arrow on the bottom left to flip pages the other direction once you are past page 1.

and You can also horizontally swipe between pages if you're on a tablet, phone or other touch enabled device. On desktops and laptops, you can also click and drag to transition between pages but this can sometimes be awkward or the app may get confused with a zoom in/out click event. What happened to the curl/swipe in the corner to turn the page? Answer: We have had many requests from readers to bring this navigation feature back. Olive software our partner is working to include this on the next release before the end of the third quarter of 2016.
