Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

Welcome back to school from the McClellan Elementary Middle School Team! We are excited to begin the school year, and hope you are as well! McClellan’s Open House this year will be on Thursday, September 5 from 4-6 pm. We would love to see you there!

My name is Mr. Cover, and I will be teaching Mathematics for the 6th-8th grades. This year, we will be using the GO Math curriculum primarily, which focuses on the following areas:

6th-Ratios and Proportional Reasoning, Geometry, Pre-Algebra Concepts, and Use of Data

7th-Equivalent Rational Numbers, Scale Concepts, Algebra, and Measures of Variation

8th-Algebra, Geometry, Interpreting and Understanding Data, and Problem Solving

All classes will include practical application of concepts in a real-world context. The best math is the kind you can actually use! The main focus will be learning and extending our knowledge of mathematics to aid us in thinking critically about the world around us, as well as solving complex and interesting problems. We will also be using digital learning tools extensively through the and websites. Both of these free sites offer important resources for students to improve and expand upon their knowledge.

Along those lines, it is vitally important that students complete their classwork and homework assignments on a regular basis, including online components. Very few people improve their work without taking time and energy to practice what they are taught consistently. Homework will be given on most nights of the week. If your son or daughter indicates that they do not have classwork or homework on a regular basis, please let me know immediately, so that we can see what is going on!

In this day of digital communication, keeping informed about your student’s challenges, opportunities and successes is more important than ever. McClellan is a part of the Remind program, with online features so that you can communicate more efficiently and effectively with your student’s teachers. As well, the Aspen Parent Portal on cps.edu is an excellent way to find out about your student’s current grades in all subject areas. Login information about Remind will be following shortly. Please note the class code to insure that you are joining the class(es) of most relevance to you. Tutorials are available on the site for signing up for and/or accessing your new Aspen Parent Portal account.

In addition (pun intended) to being the Math teacher for 6th-8th grades, I will also be the 7th grade homeroom teacher this year. Also, the Algebra program will be offered afterschool at McClellan. If your student qualifies for this program he/she will be given a letter that must be signed and returned to be enrolled. This is a great opportunity for students to gain high school credit before arriving in high school!

Please encourage your student to stay focused on their studies, so that they can maximize their learning this year. Attitude makes a huge difference for teachers, parents and students! Please ensure that your student arrives by 7:30, in uniform and ready to learn, so that they can maximize their time at school. Once again, welcome back and please feel free to contact me at ncover@cps.edu , through the Remind app, or 773.535.1732 with any questions!

Sincerely,

Mr. Cover
