Albert-Reese, PrincipalBarbara Abdullah-Smith Assistant PrincipalThe Magic Lies WithinPrincipal’s MessageGreetings Pritzker Family,On behalf of the faculty and staff, welcome to the 2019-20 school year. The continued success of our children is the result of our A.N. Pritzker Elementary School community working as a team to provide a quality education for our students. This school year we will continue to align our curriculum with the Illinois State Board of Education Common Core States Standards. These standards represent a set of expectations for student knowledge and skills that graduates need to master to succeed in college and will enable them to thrive in a global economy. Pritzker will continue to offer students in grades 6th through 8th a departmentalized middle school, which will better prepare them for high school. All students will be offered an expanded enrichment program, which will include Music, Art, Dance, Drama, PE, and Technology. In order to maintain safety and security in our school, Pritzker will reinforce the Chicago Public Schools Student Code of Conduct. Your child will receive this booklet the first week of school. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the contents of this document and review the policies with your child. As a member of the Pritzker School Community you are welcome to participate in school and classroom activities. We hope that you will share your time, talent, and suggestions for improving our school community. We look forward to seeing you at school activities, meetings, report card pick-ups, field trips and as classroom volunteers. If you have any concerns or comments, feel free to make an appointment to see me. Have a wonderful school year!OFFICE HOURSThe main office is open from 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on schools days. Sports, academics, and band are just a few of the programs available. All after school & before school programs, with the exception of tutoring, require a $10 activity fee. Permission slips will be sent home if your child is involved in any before or after school programs. No child is allowed in the building before or after school hours without approval by the Principal or Principal’s designee. If your child has permission to go to a classroom prior to the start of school, he/she MUST have a letter in hand from the teacher. If your child has younger siblings, other arrangements need to be made prior to participation in the program. Appropriate behavior and academic standing are required for participation in all before and after school programs.ATTENDANCEAttendance and achievement go hand in hand. As such, all students must attend school daily. If a student is going to be absent, the parent/guardian must call the school at 773-534-4417 before 8:30 a.m. to inform the school of their child’s absence. Upon returning to school after an absence, the student must have a note from their parent or guardian stating the reason for absence. The note must be submitted to the teacher or the Main Office. In order to be considered an excused absence, the note must indicate one of the valid causes listed below. Students will be given adequate time to complete homework assignments missed due to an excused absence. For example; if a student is absent for two days, upon their return the student shall be given two days to complete the homework assignment or a determined amount of time by the teacher.Valid causes of absence are as follows:IllnessObservance of a religious holidayDeath in the immediate familyCircumstances which cause reasonable concern to the parent or legal guardian for safety or health of the student (the reasonableness of the parent’s or legal guardian’s concern is subject to evaluation by the principal or principal’s designee.)TARDINESSTardiness is disruptive to everyone in the educational process. Students who are tardy must report to the office for a tardy slip and proceed immediately to class. After school detentions are given for persistent tardiness to school or class. Failure to serve an assigned detention will result in a one day in-school suspension. Repeated detentions and or in-school suspension may result in out of school suspension. Students who are late due to a school bus display will not be marked tardy. Students who are late due to a CTA malfunction must present a note from CTA in order not to be marked tardy.children left stranded at schoolPer Chicago Public Schools policy, the primary responsibility for the child (ren) rests with the Board of Education. In the event that a child remains at school after the close of business, the following procedure will be followed:The principal or designee notifies the Network office, at .(773)534-7562, and the Bureau of Safety and Security, (773) 553-6900 Ext. 103, when a child has not been picked up.The principal or principal's designee remains with the child. (The principal's designee must be a member of the professional education staff. It is advisable that two staff members remain with the child)Using emergency or other information, continue to attempt to reach child’s parent/legal guardian. To advance this process, it is vital that you maintain current contact information in Aspen and the child’s (emergency form. Emergency forms should be updated on an ongoing basis throughout the school year.In the event that the parent/legal guardian has not been contacted by 5:00 p.m., you may call 911, the Chicago Police Department's emergency number, and request that they take custody of the child. (It is recommended that you established and maintain a good working relationship with the Commander and police district for your school's area.)The Principal has the option to retain custody of the child and remain in the school until the child’s parent/legal guardian is contacted and the child is picked up.Grading Scale/RubricThe grading scale used at Pritzker is used system wideA - 100% -90% - substantially exceeds the standardsB - 89% - 80% - exceed the standards C - 79% - 70% - meets the standards D - 69% - 60% - less than acceptable performance on standards F - 59%- below - does not meet the standardsGrading scale subject to change based on promotion policy of Chicago Public Schools.KISS-N-GO PICK-UP AND DROP-OFFPlease adhere to the rules of the KISS-N-GO Initiative. It is against the law to park in front of the school on Schiller and on Evergreen between 7:00-4:30 pm on school days; double-parking is also illegal. Police will give tickets to all individuals not adhering to the legal guidelines. During pick-up and drop-off, please pull your car over to the curb as directed by parent and students patrol. A severe safety hazard is created when cars are double-parked while other vehicles are trying to pass. At no time should a child be encouraged to cross in the middle of the street to reach a waiting vehicle. Once children leave the school property, we are not responsible for their safety. Also, once children are dropped off in the morning, they may not leave the school grounds. Please do not drop your child off early in the morning. We are asking all parent/guardians to please complete the Income information form as soon as possible and return it to school. Our discretionary State and Federal funding is based on the number of completed forms on file and could result in a loss of funding for the school. A reduction in discretionary funding could cost us teaching positions, services, materials, and many other benefits to students! Your cooperation is needed. This helps fund our school!CAFETERIAFood and beverages may NOT be removed from the cafeteria. Food cannot be delivered to the school from restaurants during the student’s lunch period.
