Pearl Harbor Account

Analyze the battle scene when Pearl Harbor is attacked. How is the scene depicted in the book? Is it an actual historical account? Write your own first-person account of the details regarding Pearl Harbor as it may have appeared in a newspaper article the very next day.

Under the Blood Red Sun

What’s in a Name?

What is your full name? First, middle, last?

Your name tells a story about your family. It tells us something about you, your history, your family, and who you are. You were given your name for a reason. It was a conscious choice by someone, maybe even a family decision including your parents, grandparents and maybe even brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles.

If you do not know the story of your name, make sure to ask your parents, grandparents, or guardians what your name means, and what your name represents. Some of us are named after another special family member who lived long ago. Some of us are named after another special person who is not a family member, but they represent the beliefs and values your family hold important.

If you have a nickname, share it. Who gave it to you? What does it mean? What does it represent?

Names are important. They mean something. They tell everyone who we were. They remind us of who we are. This is why we do not call others bad names.

Your task is to write a paragraph about the history of your name. Next, write another paragraph about what kind of reputation you want your name to hold. Finally, write a last paragraph about what kind of reputation Grampa wants the Nakaji name to hold.

Before and After the Attack

Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast Tomi’s life before and after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Under the Blood Red Sun

Customs and Traditions

Tomi’s family owns a katana – or samurai sword – that symbolizes honor. The katana has been in the family for over 300 years. Most families have something that has been handed down for generations (Bible, pictures, letters, antiques, quilt, jewelry, toys). Ask your parents or grandparents to share with you one of the family’s most cherished items and draw it. Find out the story behind the item to share in a descriptive paragraph.
