TheisenDate: November 2020JOB SUMMARYThe Fitness Supervisor is responsible for supporting the Fitness Center Manager in operation of the Research Park Fitness Center and its associated programs, primarily developing and coordinating land-based exercise programs. The Fitness Supervisor will be responsible for maintaining, training and supervising a qualified Health/Fitness Instructor staff and insuring coverage of exercise class programming. Problems encountered are of a moderate level of difficulty and can usually be solved by using good interpersonal and problem-solving skills or consulting with others in the facility or hospital support (IT help desk, Environmental Services and Plant Engineering). General supervision and direction will be provided.A wide variety of internal contact relationships are involved in the performance of the duties of this position, including fitness center and front desk staff, Marketing and Communication, Human Resources, clinical staff, Plant Engineering and Environmental Services. External contacts include fitness center members, class participants, patients, rental groups and the general public.A high level of organizational skill is crucial to successful performance, including the ability to independently schedule staff and class activities, while considering the diverse priorities represented in our user groups. Record keeping, purchasing, advanced planning, the ability to work within a networked computer system and the ability to function within a flexible work schedule to meet changing demands are also responsibilities of this position.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESIdentify and develop group exercise classes to offer to fitness center members and community.Work with the Manager of the Fitness Center to determine hiring needs, participate in the recruitment process and annual performance reviews for group exercise class instructors. Prepare timecards for payroll and perform all related payroll functions.Ensure adequate coverage of all group exercise offerings, or in the case of a class cancellation, coordinating make-up classes or as appropriate, compensation to participants. Communicate details to all necessary parties.Assess the effectiveness and viability of group classes based on metrics such as % of class slots filled; client satisfaction; and % of returning clientsCommunicate essential program information to group exercise instructors, front desk, fitness center staff and team leaders. Support your team of instructors by responding to questions, concerns and needs in a timely fashion. Conduct instructor observations (2 observations/year) to assist with providing feedback.Coordinate resource materials, “share shops” and other ongoing training opportunities for group exercise instructors.Assist the Manager of the Fitness Center with setting priorities, developing long-range plans and successfully marketing fitness programs.Provide input on equipment and other budget needs on an on-going basis.Knowledge of computer software including use of database software, spreadsheet, internet communications, power point and word processingDevelop fluency with consumer-based registration software for group exercise classes.Assist customers in choosing appropriate classesConduct customer health and goal interviews to ensure safety and appropriateness for class programmingRespond to customer questions and concerns in a timely fashion.Schedule work hours around classes/programs as needed. Establish and post hours so that supervisors, peers and staff know when and where to expect the supervisor to be in the facilityProvide support for Fitness Center, Front Desk, and the Aquatics Center (as qualified) as needed. Extra duties may include fitness center intake evaluations, staffing the fitness center or front desk, individual appointments in the fitness center, administering blood pressure checks, lifeguard breaks (if lifeguard certified) and other patron support. Maintain CPR/AED certification at all times, respond to emergencies providing care and contacting nurse-on-call or EMS as appropriateWork with the Manager of the Fitness Center and Marketing and Communications to optimize marketing and awareness for programing and UW Health, including contribution to newsletters and other monthly updates.Maintain hospital compliance for both oneself and direct reportsInstruct at least 5 hours per week, or as needed.
