Division of Intramural Research NAEHS Council Update June 2019

DIR RECRUITMENT

Metabolomics Lead The Division of Intramural Research of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is recruiting a Staff Scientist to function as the Metabolomics Lead within the Mass Spectrometry Research and Support Group. We are seeking an experienced scientist with a proven track record to increase the capabilities and capacity of metabolomic studies at NIEHS. The Metabolomics Lead will develop and implement innovative mass spectrometry-based metabolomic analytical methods to support the research needs of NIEHS investigators. The ideal candidate will also have extensive experience developing pipelines for analysis, visualization and interpretation of complex omics data and will work closely with members of the Integrative Bioinformatics Support Group. Dr. Xiaoling Li, Senior Investigator in the Signal Transduction Laboratory is the Chair of the Search Committee.

NEW APPOINTMENTS IN DIR

New Tenure-Track Investigators

Dr. Joseph Rodriguez, Ph.D., started as a Tenure-Track Investigator in the Epigenetic and Stem Cell Biology Laboratory and member of the NIH Distinguished Scholars Program. He was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Laboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression at NCI. Dr. Rodriguez is initiating an independent research program at NIEHS focused on developing novel single-cell biophysical methods to study dynamic action of Estrogen Receptors and other transcription factors in living cells.

Dr. Marcos Morgan from the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University of Edinburgh, UK, and the European Bioinformatics Institute, has accepted a position to join the Reproductive and Developmental Biology Laboratory as an Earl Stadtman Tenure-Track Investigator. Dr. Morgan will initiate a research program at NIEHS focused on the role of RNA modifications such as uridylation and cytidylation in regulating male fertility. He is expected to start in June 2019.

Dr. Benedict Anchang, Ph.D. from the Department of Radiology at Stanford University has accepted a position as an Earl Stadtman Tenure-Track Investigator in the Biostatistics and Computational Biology Branch with a joint appointment in the NCI Center for Cancer Research. He was also selected as a member of the NIH Distinguished Scholars Program. Dr. Anchang will initiate an independent research program at NIEHS focused on developing and applying novel and innovative computational models to better understand physiology, tumor progression and responses to environmental exposures using high-dimensional singlecell data. Dr. Anchang is scheduled to start in the August 2019.

Dr. Elizabeta Gjoneska from the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT has accepted an offer to join the Neurobiology Laboratory as a Tenure-Track Investigator. Dr. Gjoneska will initiate an independent research program focused on dissecting mechanisms underlying microglial dysfunction during neurodegeneration. She is expected to start at NIEHS in September 2019.

SCIENTIFIC UPDATE BY A DIR PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR CELL LINE MODELS OF CYTOTOXIC RESPONSE - INTEGRATION OF STATISTICAL

METHODS DEVELOPMENT AND GENETIC ASSOCIATION MAPPING ALISON MOTSINGER-REIF, PH.D., CHIEF

BIOSTATISTICS AND COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY BRANCH DIR, NIEHS

The investigation and discovery of genetic factors that determine differential drug response is the fundamental goals of pharmacogenomics. Lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) have become a well-established model for understanding dose response, including exploring the genetic etiology of such drug response. Here We present the results of genome-wide association mapping studies (GWAS) for a large number of commonly used anti-cancer drugs, along with the methods development studies behind the high throughput mapping. This GWAS screen produced interesting potential candidate genes, and we present initial results of functional/clinical followup of these candidates. We will also present the initial results of clinical validation results from top candidates. Additionally, we present topical challenges and new directions related to drug combinations. These results demonstrate an integrated approach to bioinformatics methods development and application.
