SUBJECT: District Awards for Teacher Excellence, Cycle 1 and Texas Educator Excellence Grant, Cycle 3 Technical Assistance

DATE: August 28, 2007

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is pleased to begin implementation planning for Cycle 1 of the District Awards for Teacher Excellence (DATE) and Cycle 3 of the Texas Educator Excellence Grant (TEEG).

DATE is a districtwide teacher incentive awards program designed to provide funding to support the establishment of districtwide goals and implementation of a financial awards system that recognizes and rewards teacher excellence.  All districts are eligible to opt into DATE and determine which campuses are eligible to participate.

Participating districts will complete a planning year (2007-2008) to develop their district award plans.  Approximately $147.5 million dollars were appropriated for implementation of DATE in the 2008-2009 school year.

The TEEG will enter its third planned cycle. The list of eligible campuses will post on August 31, 2007, and is located on the TEA’s TEEG website at:

From this page, select the eligibility tab from the left hand navigation bar and download the eligibility list for Cycle 3.

The TEA will provide technical assistance options for districts interested in applying for the District Awards for Teacher Excellence grant and eligible Cycle 3 Texas Educator Excellence Grant campuses. The technical assistance options include DATE and TEEG: 1) program information sessions provided on-site at select regional education service centers; 2) TETN sessions provided at select regional education service centers and statewide centers; and 3) on-site workshops at select cities throughout Texas.

Sessions will be provided between September and December 2007.  The Fall 2007 Technical Assistance Calendar is provided below. (Please note additional dates are forthcoming.)

*Attendance at one of the above workshops for DATE districts is required.

These technical assistance options are designed to assist education service center staff, district administration, campus administration, and teachers with understanding each grant’s statutory, administrative rules, and TEA program requirements.

The primary audience for DATE information sessions is district administrators responsible for determining whether the district will participate in the DATE program. The primary audience for DATE workshops is a team of two to four individuals made up of members from the district’s planning committee, grants division, district-leadership team, and/or data/research division.   The primary audience for TEEG, Cycle 3 sessions is first-time eligible campus principals, teachers, and staff planning to submit grant applications in spring 2008; however, previous TEEG applicants may choose to participate.

Eligible districts and/or campuses are requested to submit to TEA an electronic Mandatory Notice of Intent to Apply by Friday, October 19, 2007. The electronic Mandatory Letter of Intent to Apply is located on the TEA website at:
