New Mexico Teacher Loan-For-Service Program 2019 APPLICATION (New and Renewal)

The purpose of the Teacher Loan-for-Service Program is to increase the number of teachers in areas of the state that have experienced shortages by making educational loans to students seeking degrees/certification in the teacher education field.

As a condition of each loan, the student shall declare his/her intent to practice as a teacher in a designated shortage area in New Mexico.

For every year of service, a portion of the student's loan will be forgiven. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100% of the loan is eligible for forgiveness. Penalties may be assessed if the service agreement is not satisfied.

U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen

Enrolled at least half-time

Enrolled at a public college or institution in New Mexico and accepted into a teacher education program

Demonstrate financial need

Selection Process: The Teacher Advisory Committee will screen applications and rank individuals based on the applicant's academic eligibility, ability to describe the need for the program, and intent to work in a designated shortage area as approved by the New Mexico Higher Education Department.

Award Amounts: Financial Aid Officers make award amount recommendations based on the student's financial need for the academic year; however, the amount of the award may not exceed $4,000 per year. The final award amount is determined by the New Mexico Higher Education Department based on available funding and the total number of eligible applicants. Funds are sent in two disbursements directly to the higher education institution at which the eligible student is enrolled.

Contract: Each student is required to sign a contract agreeing to repay the loan if, after graduation, he or she does not continue to reside in the State of New Mexico and practice as a teacher.

NOTE: For consideration, all documents must be entirely completed and included with the application packet. The application and all supporting documents must be received by 5:00PM July 1, 2019 and mailed to the address below. Scanned, Faxed or Emailed copies will not be accepted. Late applications or applications postmarked with the July 1st date but received after the July 1st deadline date will not be accepted. Once the application packet is received, no additional documents may be added to the packet.

I understand that if funded, my obligation is to serve in a designated shortage area. Failure to serve in a designated shortage area or default on your loan, no portion of your loan will be forgiven. Your loan will also bear interest at eighteen percent (18%) per annum, until paid in full. In addition the NMHED shall assess a penalty of up to three times the unpaid principal amount.

Certification Checklist

The application packet MUST be submitted in the order 1-9 (listed below). Do not staple application packet or any attached documents. Do not print 2-sided. Do not submit any envelopes in your packet. If any of the items are omitted from the application packet, your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed or considered for funding.

1. Application (Section A): Complete all fields of the Health Professions Student Loan-forService Program application with all necessary signatures. All fields within the application must be complete.

2. Obligation Agreement (Section B): Sign and date that you understand and agree to obligation.

3. School Certification (Section C): A financial aid officer at your institution must complete the School Certification Form and return the signed form to the student to include with the completed application packet. (please do not have the school mail or email the certification form to our office).
