TEXAS SCHOOL BREAKFAST REPORT CARD 03

Dear Reader,

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and studies show that children who face hunger are being left behind. Too many Texas children who participate in the free and reduced-price National School Lunch Program do not participate in the School Breakfast Program. We have enough resources in the state to address food insecurity; however, these resources are often insufficiently organized or utilized. The School Breakfast Program is an important resource with currently limited accessibility.

Fortunately, due to the tireless efforts of anti-hunger advocates in the 83rd Texas Legislative Session, we have the momentum to match the moral drive to increase participation in the School Breakfast Program. This is an exciting time for the state of Texas.

The Texas Hunger Initiative is also helping to improve breakfast participation by working with local school districts to implement innovative breakfast models such as Breakfast in the Classroom and Grab and Go Breakfast. These models fit seamlessly into the school day, enhance participation in breakfast, and reduce stigma.

We are grateful to all of our partners who are diligently working alongside us to expand the reach and impact of the existing School Breakfast Program. A special thanks to Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry Campaign team, Dairy MAX, and the Food Research and Action Center. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Center for Public Policy Priorities, Hunger Free Colorado and Children at Risk for their contributions to last year's report. This report would not have been possible without you.

Working together, we can and will end hunger in Texas.

Respectfully,

Jeremy K. Everett, Director
