Theme Events

Activity Professionals use themes for all of their celebrations. The most used theme is a Mother's Day Tea. We all are looking for inspiration to make the events memorable and to let residents, families and staff enjoy a unique experience. There is sure a lot of inspiration on the Internet. The main source of inspiration is Pinterest. Many ideas and themes can be found from Sock Monkey Parties to Mother's Day Tea Parties. You can look at lots of sites with lots of ideas. You might want to share your hunt for themes with your residents. Hook up the laptop or tablet to the TV and explore all of the themes and have the residents pick them. You can do this early in the year and they can pick one theme for each month. You would be surprised at the themes that they pick and planning will be easier for the activities staff. Engage the residents in making the decorations, invitations and games for each event. This will inspire the residents and have them talk up the event.

Picking themes also relies on the interests of your residents. A Dairy Week theme may not work if the residents have no interest in farming and have been urban dwellers. Although they might enjoy some aspects, plan accordingly. On the other hand, a party based on a Bing Band Music Theme may be of interest to all of the residents.

There are themes picked by the American Health Care Association for National Nursing Home week that always starts on Mother's Day. This year's theme is "Bring on the Fiesta"!

The National Center for Assisted Living () is looking for a theme for this year's celebration and should announce it soon. They celebrate in September and this year it's Sept. 13-19, 2015. Also the National Adult Day Services () Week is in September as well and should be announced soon.

Using themes can add a twist to your daily activities. There are lots of theme Bingo cards for example that can be used during your theme events. Sometimes using a Bingo game for entertainment during your theme event will save you money on entertainment. Using themed prizes as well will encourage all participants to find unique items.

Almost all themes can be adapted to all of your activities. A week of activities based on a theme can be a way to motivate residents to participate. What a great thing to have a certificate at the end of the theme week that says "Mary Smyth participated in Sock Week". The certificate of participation can then be a way to tell families and visitors that Mary participated in activities.

You can use anything for a theme and I mean anything. Colors, seasons, local celebrations, numbers, food, the alphabet, travel, transportation or music can inspire the theme for your events. Remember that a theme is not limited to only one party. It can be adapted to a week or a month.
