Book Fair Theme Ideas

Schools around the nation have proven again and again that attendance and sales increase when they create a story for their Fair! Get together with your Crew and plan themed activities and decorations. Talk to them, they know what they and their friends like, and they'll surprise you with their innovative concepts.

1. '80s Book Fair

Announce historical events from the '80s over the PA system every day. Hold a "Who has the tallest '80s hair?" contest. Play '80s pop music throughout the week.

2. iRock iRead

Ask students to write songs about books to the tunes of some of their favorite pop songs and then perform at the Book Fair reading rally.

3. Book Fair Bistro

Set up a French restaurant with Crew chefs in paper toques and aprons. Display a "menu of books." Host a "make your own crepe" dessert family event!

4. Reading's Right On

Pass out flyers inviting your community to share in a Fair full of peace, love, and books. Wear tie-dyed shirts, fill the air with '60s music, and invite parents to strut their '60s fashion at the Fair.

5. Lights, Camera, Book Fair!

Ask your community to vote on their favorite books and add it to a reading walk of fame.

6. King's Royal Book Fair

Transform your media center into a castle. Invite everyone to dress as medieval royalty. Crown a "King or Queen for a Day." Offer special school priviliges to the winner of the reading challenge.

7. To the Book Fair and Beyond

Get Crew members to dress up as aliens and promote this space-centric Fair to students during lunch. Create an All for BooksTM collection container shaped like a spaceship.

10. C U @ the Book Fair

Add a techy twist! Set up a Book Fair blog for customers to visit at the Fair. Decorate with giant smartphones featuring mini book reviews in text messages around the Fair.

11. Ski Mt. Book Fair

Turn your Book Fair into a frosty snow-scape. Air a reading forecast over the PA-system every morning, featuring quick booktalks.

12. Book Fair Funnies

Turn your Fair into a comic strip collection full of favorite characters. Make foam core speech bubbles and hang for photo opps.

13. Fall Festival Book Fair

Throw a Family Event complete with bales of hay, hot apple cider, s'mores, and a professional storyteller.

14. Book Fair Luau

Everyone loves the laid-back feel of a Hawaiian luau. Hang leis from the ceiling, create a paper-mache volcano goal chart, and throw a Luau Family Night.

15. Take Me Out to the Book Fair!

Students can catch a great book at this Book Fair! Serve popcorn and hot dogs at your Family Night, and induct students into a reading hall of fame.
