Welcome Message from the POMS President

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 30th Annual Conference of the Production and Operations Management Society! This 30th anniversary conference is particularly exciting as it is being held in Washington, DC where the inaugural meeting of POMS took place in 1990. I joined POMS that year and have been active in the society since those early years. It has been extraordinary to witness how much POMS has grown from what was then a small society to its current leading stature. POMS has become an international professional organization representing the interests of POM professionals around the world. Today POMS has well over 2100 members across fifty-five countries and has become an international community of scholars, growing every year.

At POMS we are continuously growing and expanding our boundaries, both geographically and intellectually. Every POMS conference reaches new heights offering innovation and rigor in presentations, sessions, and tutorials. This meeting is no exception. With the cutting edge theme of POM in Data Driven Smart Decision Making Era this conference has attracted a record high number of abstract submissions. Big data and the techniques used to analyze them hold significant promise for improving and changing POM across all industry sectors. Big data and analytics have ushered in a new era of concepts including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchains, Autonomous Vehicles, Sharing Economy ? all supporting data driven smart decision making. At this conference we will be exploring these cutting-edge concepts across all areas of POM.

This conference would not be possible without the tireless and dedicated efforts of many volunteers. It is their tireless work that has made organizing a conference of this quality and success possible. On behalf of POMS, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and thanks to the organizing committee members, Max Shen (General Chair), Nan Yang and Ruxian Wang (Program Co-Chairs), Ken Klassen (Scheduling Chair), Tej Dhakar (Proceedings Editor), Claire Senot and Carrie Queenan (Leaders in Practice Session Co-Chairs), Goker Aydin (Emerging Scholars Chair), Ozge Sashin (Doctoral Consortium Program Chair), Seema Singhania (Program Coordinator), Matthew Smith (Website Coordinator), Gerald Burke (Vice President ? Meetings), Bala Shetty (Associate Vice President for Sponsorship), Nagesh Murthy (Associate Executive Director ? Global Initiatives), Xiuli He (VP of Colleges), Ram Tiwari (Coordinator Conference Activities), Bharat Kaku (Local Arrangements Coordinator), and Victoria Brodie (Web Developer). I especially want to thank Sushil Gupta (Executive Director) whose steadfast leadership, wisdom and devotion guides the planning and execution of every annual conference. In addition to these individuals, I would also like to thank all the track chairs and session organizers, who organized invited and submitted papers to create an outstanding program for this anniversary meeting.

The Program Committee has done an outstanding job in organizing a superb event with excellent keynote speakers and mini-conferences, including the first "POMS- Best Data-Driven Research Paper Competition" - a competition of research papers that advances the frontiers of data-driven methodologies for POM. I am sure you will find the conference, sessions, and presentations insightful and thought-provoking.

I look forward to seeing and welcoming each of you in Washington DC! Nada R. Sanders Distiguished Professor D'Amore-McKim School of Business Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts, USA
