Quadratics – Solving for ‘x’ with a graphing calculator

EX: x2 + 6x + 8

(x + 4)(x + 2) factored form

x = -4 and -2 solutions for x

Vertex (-3, -1) vertex (max or min value of parabola)

Helpful Website to graph at home: Click on Equation Grapher

To Graph…

1. Turn calculator on.

2. Hit the Y= button and type your equation into Y1.

3. Hit GRAPH to see the parabola.

4. If you need to fix the window you have two options.

-To get a standard 10x10 window go to ZOOM and select 6:ZStandard.

-To pick your window options, go to WINDOW and select the values you want for the xmin,

xmax, ymin, and ymax – everything else should stay as ‘1’.

To Solve for ‘x’…

1. Go to 2nd TRACE (so you’re selecting CALC) and select 2:zero.

2. The calculator will ask for the left bound, so use the left and right arrow keys to move the cursor to the left of the zero (or x-intercept). Once this is done hit ENTER. Follow the same steps for finding the right bound, hit ENTER, and then hit ENTER one more time to guess.

3. The calculator will give you the x-intercept that you were looking for. To find the other x-intercept, you will have to repeat steps 1 and 2 above.

To Find the Vertex…

1. Go to 2nd TRACE (so you’re selecting CALC) and select 3:minimum or 4:maximum depending on which value the vertex appears to be.

2. The calculator will ask for the left bound, so use the left and right arrow keys to move the cursor to the left of the vertex. Once this is done hit ENTER. Follow the same steps for finding the right bound, hit ENTER, and then hit ENTER one more time to guess.

3. The vertex coordinates will appear on the bottom of your screen.
