Program Summary: ICD 10 Beyond basics - the fundamentals for diagnoses coding; This eight (6)hour program reviews the components of ICD 10 CM diagnoses coding with the focus on developing the skill set to use the ICD 10 CM text. The hands on approach includes lecture with activities and exercises which focus on code identification from indexes; neoplasm and drug and biologic tables through the tabular text.

Timed Program outline:

15 minutes: Getting started - a review of course materials, handouts, exercises, reference materials and study guide for continual study

The course materials include: (2014 version)

Flash drive with ICD 10 Guidelines; ICD 10 Tabular File, ICD 10 Index to Disease

Conditions; ICD 10 Index to Cause and Injuries; Table of Drugs; Table of Neoplasm;

ICD 10 CM and ICD 10 PCS (this course does not include ICD 10 PCS) Coding

Handbook 2013 - Includes Case Summary Exercises by Nelly Leon-Chisen, RHIA; AHA Coding Clinic

Recommended: Medical dictionary; basic coding for anatomy text or internet access for resource

60 minutes: Detailed review of the guidelines section of the text to understand and practice the common terms of ICD 10 including: includes, excludes 1 and excludes 2; general guidelines with exercises to reinforce learning process

30 minutes: Review of symptoms and their role and process within ICD 10 CM

30 minutes: Coding of 3 cases (simple) from index to tabular section

** break (lunch)

60: Code review of 6 cases from index through Tabular Section for identification of coding process of how the codes were selected the rules for primary, secondary and additional coding

30 minutes: Looking at Neoplasm coding with exercises to highlight the difference in type of neoplasms; location of neoplasm and related status codes from Z section and coding of treatment, side effects and medication issues

30 minutes: Identify basic surgery diagnoses and the process for complications, late effects and issues identified as “sequela”

45 minutes: Combination coding for diagnoses and conditions that have multiple factors. A review of key systems - circulatory; respiratory; genitourinary and gastroenterology

45 minutes: Review of Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of

external causes (S00-T88)

15 minute: Review and identified plan for transition to ICD 10 CM

Goals/Objectives:

To obtain the basic skill level for ICD 10 CM coding to enable the participant to:

1) Identify basic concepts of ICD 10 code structure in terms of number of characters per code set, meaning of the code structure

2) Identify basic terms and concepts including: includes notes; excludes1, excludes 2, rank order based on code structure and combination code process

3) Ability to use the Index of Disease/Condition to consistently locate ICD 10 CM codes

4) Ability to use the Neoplasm table to identify the key locations within the Tabular Section for specific condition coding

5) Ability to use the Table of Drugs and Biologicals to identify the key locations and process for coding drug and biological status as primary and secondary conditions

6) Ability to use the Tabular section of the text with a full understanding of the components within the code structure for code selection by specificity, laterality, complication and correctly rank order

7) To identify and set up a learning plan for themselves and their practice for transition to ICD10 CM.

Testing:

Within the program there are 30 specific exercises for the student to complete for both coding and knowledge. An additional 10 questions are provided for follow up education (see next page for questions and answers)
