The pre-requisites for this course are: CED 6333, Counseling Techniques; CED 6321, Professional Orientation; CED 6327, Theories of Counseling; CED 6329, Group Counseling; for students in school counseling CED 6310, Counseling in the Schools; for students in a community (ie: agency) counseling setting CED 6350, Community Counseling; CED 6322, Abnormal Human Behavior. 24 Hours completed in the program. Consent of the instructor. (See University of Houston-Victoria Catalog).

Teaching methods and expectations: Students are expected and encouraged to actively participate in this learning experience. My goal is to utilize skill building, seminar-style class discussion, case presentations, and other methods to monitor and facilitate students’ self-awareness, professionalism, and the integration of academic and experiential learning.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The student will be expected to demonstrate the following competencies:

1. Ability to develop and maintain a facilitative and ethical counselor-client relationship. (CACREP III. G.1).

2. Ability to respond to a client at a facilitative level. (CACREP III. G.1).

3. Ability to conceptualize clients from the basis of a guiding theory. (CACREP III. G1.)

4. Ability to assist clients in movement toward achievement of their goals, utilizing effectively both basic and advanced counseling skills, techniques, and procedures consistent with students’ guiding theory. (CACREP III. G. 1).

5. Ability to critique counseling abilities of self and fellow students in a manner that enhances counseling abilities. (CACREP III. G.1.)

6. Ability to terminate or refer clients based upon clients’ needs and students’ competencies. (CACREP III. G. 1.)

7. Ability to write interview summaries, case conceptualizations, and/or reports including DSM-IV-TR diagnosis. (CACREP III. G.4).

8. Ability to adhere to ACA ethical standards.

9. Ability to participate constructively in consultant-style supervision, including use of supervisory feedback to modify subsequent counseling behavior. (CACREP III. G.2.)

10. Ability to demonstrate technological competency with word processing in written summaries and other reports; also in ability to use audio-taping equipment for session taping and supervisory feedback. (CACREP III. H. 5.)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Students will be expected to attend class and will meet for 1 ½ hours once a week for group supervision. (CACREP III. G. 2., G. 3.).

2. Students are expected to engage in one-hour weekly of one-on-one or one-on-two supervision with the practicum instructor. (CACREP III. G. 2., G. 3.).

2. All practicum students will need to present proof of liability insurance before the accumulation of practicum hours. (CACREP III, M).

3. The following forms will need to be filled out and submitted to practicum supervisor by the second class meeting. All forms required for practicum can be found on WebCT under “Practicum Packet Forms”

• Signed and dated Letter from On-site Supervisor

• If counseling in a school setting, a signed and dated Principal’s Consent Form verifying his or her understanding, approval, and support of your counseling in the school. Use school letterhead.

4. Log: Students will keep a counseling log which the Practicum Instructor and on site Supervisor will initial weekly. Log forms can be found on WebCT under the “Practicum Packet Forms”.

5. CASE STUDY: Each student will be responsible for preparing one formal case study. The case study will include a brief description of the client, the presenting issue, the counselor’s assessment or problem hypothesis and proposal for interventions. Please remember to adhere to confidentiality. Format for case study is available on WebCT.

6. Video and/or Audio-tapes, the Counseling Skills Scale and a Self- Assessment of Abilities questionnaire will be used to evaluate the practicum student as he/she progresses through the practicum. Students will submit two video and/or audio-tapes on dates assigned by instructor that illustrates the student’s counseling skills. An Informed Consent form must be completed before a practicum student can do a video and/or audiotape. For each video and/or audiotape a student will complete a Counseling Skills Scale form and a Self-Assessment of Abilities form which will be turned in along with the video and/or audiotape. The Counseling Skills Scale, along with the self-assessment of abilities questionnaire will be used by the practicum supervisor to evaluate and provide feedback to the practicum student. The consent form for video/audiotaping, the Counseling Skills Scale, and the self assessment of abilities questionnaire can be found on WebCT under “other forms”. If the site does not permit taping than students are still expected to complete the Counseling Skills Scale.

7. Evaluations: The onsite/field Supervisor(s) will do an evaluation on the practicum student at mid-term and final on a standard evaluation form that can be found on WebCT under “Practicum Packet Forms”.  

The final grade will be determined by your Practicum Instructor based on your work as evaluated by your onsite/field supervisor, evaluation of video and/or audiotapes,and on your satisfactory completion of all class requirements. You will receive either S for Satisfactory or U for Unsatisfactory. If a grade of U is given, the student must retake this course for credit.

The Practicum Student must keep the Practicum Instructor advised of any problems that may arise or are occurring at the practicum site.

Class policies:

Plagiarism: Any student who represents the written work of another person as his or her own for an assignment will receive a grade of zero (0) for said assignment and may face disciplinary action through the University.

Attendance: As per University policy, students are expected to attend every class. Exigent and dire circumstances may preclude student attendance, and should such events occur students are expected to contact the instructor via either the e-mail address provided on this syllabus or by contacting the Senior Secretary Kathy Rich at (281) 275-3370. Coordinating absences with the instructor is the first step to minimizing the impact of said absences on student grades.

Extra credit: Students are afforded sufficient credit opportunities by fulfilling class requirements. Barring exigent and dire circumstances, extra credit will not be accepted or approved.

Incompletes: Students are strongly encouraged to confirm with their site supervisor that they will be able to complete all above requirements by the end of the semester BEFORE deciding on a practicum site. Incompletes will only be given under extreme circumstances. In accordance with University policy, all incompletes must be completed in the semester following the one in which they are received. If this is not done, the grade reverts to Failure.  

Professionalism and Diversity: Acting within the bounds of professionalism and the student code of conduct is required. Encountering new ideas, new ways of knowing, and interacting with people different from ourselves are pillars of the college experience. Intimidating (e.g., Racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, etc.,) language will be challenged in this classroom. Students will be encouraged and expected to be mindful of this and other diversity related issues.

Accommodations: Students requiring personalized arrangements for test taking, classroom access, or other accessibility concerns should contact the Office of Student Accessibility and notify the instructor.

Electronic devices: Ringing and beeping devices are expected to be set on vibrate or non-audio during class time in order to reduce disruption.

Course changes: I reserve the right to modify assignment structure, re-arrange topic discussion, and to make as needed changes to the course. Students will always be notified in advance of said changes. Students will be asked to contribute feedback and input to changes instituted by the instructor.
