Creative Commons This site "offers convenient access to search services provided by other independent organizations." Search for photos, illustrations, and music. Freepik Free photos, vectors, and illustrations. Often, the photos link to other sites, so it's important that you check the license and the original source. A good place to search for photos from other sources.

Pixabay Search for photos, illustrations, and vectors, all in the public domain. No account is necessary, unless you want to avoid entering Captcha text. Can choose from multiple sizes to download. Watch out for photos from istock, which aren't free but are clearly marked.

Flickr Search by license, tag, color, and more.

Flickr Commons Search publicly held photography collections at major institutions such as the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library. The photos have no known copyright restrictions and are usually archival.

IM A searchable, curated collection of photos that you can reuse.

Magdeleine A free, high-resolution photo every day. Search by keyword, category, or dominant color.

Picjumbo Download free lifestyle photos for personal or commercial use, or become a member for $6/month.

Picography Free, searchable photos to use however you want.

Photos (Not Searchable)

Death to the Stock Photo Sign up to receive a free monthly email pack of photos. Each pack is themed.

Gratisography Free photos for your personal and commercial use. Many of these are funny and offbeat. Again, no way to search the photos, but you can sign up to be notified of new posts.

Raumrot Free for commercial and other use, as long as you credit the photographer. Browse by category. Clicking the download link takes you to Flickr.

Superfamous Available for reuse under a CC license as long as you credit the creator.

Unsplash Download beautiful, high resolution photos for free, no strings attached. You can also sign up to receive emailed photos. There is no way to search the photos, so I wouldn't recommend this site if you're looking for something specific.

ClipArt Etc. Free vintage clipart.

Flat Icon Download free vector icons in different formats and sizes. Must give the author credit.

Internet Archive Book Images Scanned images from the Internet Archive in the public domain.

Open Clipart Free, public domain clipart. Download in different sizes and even edit the art online before you download.

The Noun Project Find an icon for just about any noun you can think of. You can use an image for free if you give credit, or you can buy the license. Must create an account.

The Pattern Library Free tileable patterns to use in your own designs. The background on this page is from The Pattern Library.

Vintage Printable Vintage Printable provides "free, public domain/out-of-copyright images for you to print or download. Most of the images are vintage naturalist or scientific illustration, but there are loads of other images, too. "

Wellcome Images Download contemporary and historical images from this collection that focuses on the history of medicine. Must have a free account in order to download the images.

Art

Europeana "Explore millions of items from a range of Europe's leading galleries, libraries, archives and museums" including "books and manuscripts, photos and paintings, television and film, sculpture and crafts, diaries and maps, sheet music and recordings...." Can search by copyright information. The Getty Open Content Program "The Getty makes available, without charge, all available digital images to which the Getty holds the rights or that are in the public domain to be used for any purpose. No permission is required." Images that qualify have a download link. The Metropolitan Museum of Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art provides Open Access for Scholarly Content of more than 400,000 items. Visit their FAQ page for more specifics. Rijksmuseum Create a free account to download the artwork from this Dutch museum, create an online gallery, and share with others. You can even create your own personalized products using the images, although they don't currently deliver to the United States.
