2013 EASTER JEEP SAFARI ADVENTURES

Moab, Utah

V1-1 June 2013

WARN Winches is always generous to invite us on two days of wheeling kicking off our full week in Moab, Utah during the Easter Jeep Safari. If you have had time to join the WARN Crew on the trail or have had any interaction with the group out of Oregon, you know what a great group of people they are.

The weeklong event started out extremely cold! It was a freezing 19 degrees when I jumped into the truck at 7:30am on Sunday morning to head to the meeting point. There is no denying I was glad to be inside the Toyota truck that led the Media Run on Metal Masher. By the end of the day there was a beautiful blue sky that really brought out the color of the red rocks.

Visit their website and check out the new ZEON Winch.

Friends of WARN Winches includes

Monday was the Friends of WARN Winches run on the Steel Bender trail. The book said it was 14.9 miles and should take about 6-7 hours. Yep! That's about how long it took! The trail had a series of difficult obstacles that challenged all the drivers and vehicles.

Unfortunately, the Full Size Dodge Truck that comes on the run every year broke mid-way through so their group had to pull off and cut back early. I will say, that truck continues to amaze me at what it does every year! See what I am talking about in the Videos.

My Ride both Sunday & Monday.

Thanks Clifton & Nate DeWitt!

CRAWL Magazine Readers Ride at AreaBFE was on the schedule for Tuesday. The wind was chilling on top of the hill as they set up the main staging area for the action of the day. I hung out by AreaBFE's main entrance greeting industry friends and folks from all over the US who were converging together to hang out with the CRAWL Magazine Crew.

AreaBFE is a perfect setting for this type of an event, big enough to have

different levels of trail rides, but small enough where everyone still has a

sense of togetherness.

The day started with a welcoming by Ian

Johnson, John Herrick and Larry Nickell.

Then three different groups were formed

based on skill and vehicle capabilities.

Easy to difficult. Leaders included Ian

Johnson from CRAWL, Larry McRae

from Poison Spyder and Tony Pellegrino

Lined up like brightly colored Easter

Eggs, the CRAWL Crew was onsite to enjoy the day with subscribers and industry leaders.

from GenRight. And off we went!

I got to ride in a real rock bouncin' rig from the East! That is until I got to the trail and had to turn on the cameras and

get to work. Read more about my ride in

the May/June 2013 CRAWL issue...in

fact, all the coverage from Moab is in

that issue. If you didn't pick it up, you

should!

My fancy ride to the trail head. This

buggy made everything look easy! Thanks Bill McClister!

After a great day on the trails, all the participants were encouraged to come back to the main area at 3pm for a free raffle. Everyone was given a ticket and there were a lot of people leaving with smiling faces! Another successful CRAWL Magazine Readers Ride in the books!

There was a great turn out for this open

Readers Ride event at AreaBFE.

AreaBFE is a 320 acre recreational park for many different outdoor activities. AreaBFE is open and free to the public 365 days/year. They do accept donations at the statue near the entry for those who wish to help support the endeavor and assist with the overall upkeep. There are trails, camping areas and many other fun destination points on the property.

View From My Office Headed to Moab

I have childhood memories of going to Moab. It took two days to drive there from CA and we stayed in the motorhome at the Canyonlands RV park. I can still remember walking to the gas station for ice cream, driving with my Dad up (the now closed) Lions Back in his Flatty and of course endless hours of bouncing along the trails gawking at the arches and the colors. My brother and I hiked and were the fast kids that ran around looking at amazing rocks that were beyond my comprehension. Well, they are still beyond my comprehension and I still gawk! I love this place!

Now, mostly a work trip and not as much a family fun trip anymore, I still love the sights and enjoy being around all my friends.

If you haven't been to Moab, UT before, be sure to put it on your "MUST get There One Day!" list. It is worth it!

Did you know? The first Easter Jeep Safari was held in 1967! What started as a one-day event now takes nine days. Sponsored by the Red Rock 4Wheelers and the Moab Chamber of Commerce, the safari is held the week prior to Easter every year. The event features over 30 runs, including several easy enough for stock vehicles.

Having some fun at the end of the day on Friday.

Matt joined us on the trail before Dirt Riot.

On a different note, I hope that you will enjoy these Newsletters. They will be coming out in time to be in the Monthly Shirt & Swag Club shipments and distributed to more that would like to receive it. Thanks!

Kicks Off 3rd Year

Wednesday was the Media day for BFGoodrich, Raceline Wheels, Rancho Suspension and Dynomax Suspension at AreaBFG. The media and friends of the companies were invited to come and experience the products.

New Release at 2013 Moab EJS

A few years ago, well a little over 3 to be exact; I had an idea to start a clothing line.

I wanted to create a line that had a respectful saying and a generous cut that everyone could feel comfortable wearing from petite XS to 4XL. Yep! You read right...4XL!

I get to celebrate and count the years at Moab EJS since I took my first set of shirts and stayed up all night preparing them to sell back in 2011! I sign the banner that is in Grandpa's Garage every year with pride.

Coming into the third year of the brand, we have released yet another design, and have many more staged to release throughout the year. (If you have a design idea,

contact me to find out how to have it included in the line! It's a pretty cool program I just set up to get shirts into different segments of the market.)

All of our shirts are now stocked on the for sale and are available at every Dirt Riot and WERock Rock Crawl Event.

We have also created a full $10 Jewelry Line that will be available online soon!

And I am blogging about more of my experiences and random thoughts on the new and simple website

Three different groups went out to wheel the AreaBFE ~ I mean AreaBFG trails.

The morning started with a product features presentation by the companies. With top engineers and staff onsite, the presentation was a wealth of information.

Product specialists were available to talk

and answer any questions.

The first annual party was a HUGE hit!

Then we hit the trails and were off to enjoy a day at AreaBFG. We were given some pretty awesome Coolers packed with Snacks, Water and Information (I get

to say that because we put them together )

Wednesday evening was the First Annual Party that featured a Grand Prize drawing of over $6,000 in products and the announcement of the 2013 BFGoodrich Outstanding Trails:

Dutch John Trail ? Uwharrie National Forest Troy, North Carolina

Kansas Rocks Recreation Park Mapleton, Kansas

Truckhaven ? Salton Sea, California

Raceline Wheels Greg Mulkey and Bart Dixon came out to Moab to wheel the rig that they recently raced at the King of the Hammers. We have always been fans of the very fancy, functional and strong wheels.

Raceline Wheels jeep showed it's

crawling ability on the trails of Moab.

Not only was it a week of "work" talking with current wheel owners, interested folks and industry leaders, they also found time to get out on the trails.

On Thursday night Raceline Wheels and GenRight had a Customer Appreciation Party at Grandpa's Garage. It was a huge success with great food, a full moon and videos playing on the big screen!

Monster Wheels are the most popular

among wheelers and racers, but there are many different styles...including options for your everyday vehicle!

Friday started a little different than originally anticipated with a trail ride on Behind the Rocks with the CRAWL Magazine crew and Bailey & Wayland Campbell. A trail ride and a photo shoot wrapped into one! Tim McGee took the official photos, but of course I took a few behind the scenes...and even created a video! The article on the Campbell's can be seen in the May/June issue.

CRAWL Magazine featuring the next generation of Campbell Racing.

I got to ride with Wendy Nickell, one of the tough girls in the rock crawling world. She drives her own jeep...she isn't going to be a passenger in her husband Larry's. She competes in the different rock crawling series.

When we came off the trail, we headed straight over to AreaBFE to see the prerunning for Saturday's Dirt Riot race. Teams from all over the country came to race on this fan favorite course.

My Ride. Thanks Wendy!

The racing format was different than a typical Dirt Riot race with a green flag on the top section, three laps around the greater portion of AreaBFE and then two additional laps around the top pit area in front of hundreds of spectators.

Saturday's Dirt Riot Pro 4500, Pro 4600, Mod Trail Class and Stock Trail Classes all ran together in the morning hour.

Jeff Rector, the Ironman of the day who competed in every single minute of racing, won the Pro 4500 class and Pro 4600 Matt Peterson added a Dirt Riot win to his recent 2012 Everyman Challenge King of the Hammers win.

Congratulations to Andrew McLaughlin

from LetzRoll Offroad on the Dirt Riot win!

The UTV class held the most entertainment of the day hearing spectators cheering from every vantage point. Five drivers, raced and only one took the checker flag: Ironman Jeff Rector.

Twenty Professional 4400 4x4 class drivers roared around the course. It was Andrew McLaughlin in the LetzRoll Offroad car that had consistently fast first and second heats. Brad Lovell, who had started on the pole, finished heat one in 11th after changing a driveshaft, but he proved his amazing driving skills starting in the back of the pack in the second heat and finishing so quickly that he finished second overall! Levi Shirley continued to show his skills with another great finish, also taking second on average times. See full results at

And that wraps up our full week in Moab! There are many other parties, dinners, shirt selling chaos, a full day at the vendor show and more that didn't even get a mention, but are just as important...and fun to be part of. Heck, the whole week is fun!

Brad Lovell proved this Dirt Sports

Driver of the Year Status.

Ironman Jeff Rector raced every minute

of 4400, 4500 and UTV classes.

Easter Sunday morning we got up, loaded up the truck and trailer and headed home on a leisurely drive stopping to enjoy an Easter Brunch under the rocks (Yes! That's Piston!) A great end to a great week! Hope to see you in Moab next year!
