“TAX THE 1%” PROTESTS – April 17th, 2012

Background:

As millions of Americans file their taxes on Tax Day, April 17, members of will join allies at ‘tax the 1%’ protests across the country to demonstrate our collective outrage that the rich and corporations aren't paying their fair share to help rebuild the economy. Participants will demand that the 1% pay their fair share in taxes to help rebuild the economy so that it works for everyone.

Tax the 1% is a national day of action and part of the ‘99% Spring’—which kicked off from April 9-15 when 100,000 people across the country were trained to use nonviolent direct action for the 99%.

Talking Points:

PROBLEM: Big corporations and the wealthiest 1% aren’t paying their fair share of taxes.

• The system is rigged, so the rich are getting richer while many hardworking Americans are falling behind.

• There are two sets of rules – one for the 1%, and one for everyone else.

• Big corporations and the wealthiest 1% have gamed the tax system with loopholes and special interest privileges. As a result, the 1% are not paying their fair share.

• Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Mitt Romney pays only a 14% tax rate. Wall Street and Big Oil get billions in tax kickbacks – Wells Fargo alone has received tens of billions of dollars over the last few years. Some giant corporations pay no U.S. taxes.

• When the 1% don’t pay their fair share, the rest of us foot the bill and the economy suffers.

SOLUTION: It’s time to tax the 1% so everyone pays their fair share.

• Taxing the 1% is the quickest way to rebuild our economy so it works for everyone.

• If we tax millionaires and corporations—the 1%—their fair share, our communities can invest in our schools and job training programs instead of deciding which teachers to lay off and what to cut next.

• We can bring fairness to the tax code if we end the Bush tax cuts for the 1%, tax Wall Street, and pass the Buffett Rule to close loopholes that allow the wealthy to pay a lower tax rate than the rest of us.

PROTEST: We are rising up as part of the 99% Spring, demanding fairness for the 99%.

• We’re here today to express our outrage that the rich and corporations like [insert target] aren't paying their fair share to help rebuild the economy.

• We pay our fair share in taxes. [insert target] should too.

• [Add more target-specific talking points if merited.]

• This protest is part of the 99% Spring. We are rising up to challenge and change a system rigged for the 1% so that the same rules apply to everybody.

• Our movement has new energy and power to fight back.
