REPORT ON 2012 INTER-DISTRICT BASIC AND INTER-ZONES HIGH SCHOOLS ATHLETICS AND CHESS TOURNAMENT

INTRODUCTION

This year's version of provincial athletic and chess tournament was a special one of its kind in the province. This is because both basic and high schools held this event at the same time. The tournament was hosted on the 30th and 31st of March 2012 at Njase Girls' Secondary School with SPAR Choma sponsorship.

DESCRIPTION OF PLAY FORMAT

During this year's tournament, basic schools participated as district teams while high schools as zone teams. Inter-district games were held on Friday 30th March 2012. High schools' inter-zones were held the following day, which was Saturday 31st March 2012.

To bring to the fore why high school teams called zones instead of district is because some districts have either one/two high schools or too many of them to necessitate quality competitions. For instance, Namwala district has Kasenga Girls and Namwala high schools. During the ball, athletics and indoor games, the Namwala boys teams would not have competitors. Choma district has too many secondary schools. To balance the equation, St Marks, Frances Davison, Jonathan Sim and Macha Secondary Schools have been pushed to Namwala, thus calling it a zone. Other schools that have been delinked from Choma district are Sikalongo, Batoka high and Choma Day high taken to Sinazongwe Zone while Pemba high has been attached to Monze Zone. Furthermore, Kazungula and Mukuni High Schools under Kazungula district have been put under Livingstone zone.

COMPETITION

The Friday's inter-district competitions went well and saw the birth of the highly supported ZoneX team. ZoneX team was a selection of best athletes from basic schools. This team competed on Saturday with the high schools' zone teams as ZoneX. This was with the purpose of making a better and well refined provincial team.

Backed by a thunderous support of all the District Education Board Secretaries (DEBS), ZoneX scored 203 points way far above the closest runner-up zone (Kalomo) which scored 125 point. For more details, refer to appendix 01. Kindly note that this appendix only shows the results where ZoneX participated. Appendices 02 and 03 show the full ranking of districts and zones by the end of the tournament.

SELECTION

A team of 112 pupils (Appendix 06) was selected to represent the province in Lusaka at Olympics Youth Development Centre (OYDC). The inter-provincial games were held from Saturday 7th to Monday 9th April 2012. This team had 41 athletics girls and 11 chess girls. The athletics boys were 49 while the chess boys were 11. ZoneX made 48.2% (54 participants) of the team.

INTER-PROVINCIAL GAMES

The provincial team did not perform very well in Lusaka. On overall, the province fell in the 4th place after scoring 285 points. Lusaka province is this year's champion with 473 points followed by Copperbelt with 428 points. Refer to Appendix 5 for further details.

Nevertheless, the province contributed three (3) girls to the national team going to Botswana for Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) for athletics competition scheduled to take place from 11th to 13th May 2012. The names of the girls are Univa Chikandi (Kaunga Basic ? Mazabuka (ZoneX athlete)), Milambo Mirriam (Choma Secondary) and Abgail Sepiso (Linda High). It should be noted that during COSSASA games, chess is not one of the game competed in.

AWARDS AND SPONSORSHIP

For three years now, SPAR Choma has been sponsoring the high schools' interzones athletics and chess tournament to a tune of K10,000,000 each year. But this year, SPAR Choma extended its budget to K23,540,000 in procurement of 40 silver, 40 bronze, 40 gold medals, 3 overall winners' trophies and mineral water. SPAR Choma also awarded all the 120 medallist with a shopping voucher of K80,000 each. Refer to Appendix 4 for more details. The award ceremony was graced by the District Administrative Officer (DAO). The official opening was graced by the District Commissioner Mr Nyambe.

APPRECIATIONS

The SPSSA is very grateful to SPAR Choma for making the inter-district/zones competition a great event. The awards have sent a loaded message to pupils in

schools not to sit on the fence and watch but rather to woke up and participate in sports since there are immediate benefits. Thus this sponsorship will raise the interest of athletics among pupils.

The association also thank Njase Secondary School and Choma District, particularly the DEBS and her organising team who worked tirelessly to put in place all facilities necessary for hosting an event of that great magnitude.

Attributes also goes to the Njase majorettes and the Choma brass band for the entertainment during the opening and closing ceremonies.

Finally the association also thanks the Office of the Provincial Education Office (PEO), the provincial DEBS association and the provincial head teachers association for facilitating the camping and travel of the teams to Lusaka.
