6th Grade Integer Timeline Project

7th Grade Integer Timeline Project

What is this project?

You will be creating a timeline that uses events from both before and after your birth. You will be labeling them with years as well as integers. Choose 1 important event for each year of your life. You will also choose five events from different years before you were born. They could be Elvis’ birth date, or the year Michael Jordan won his first NBA Championship, or the year your grandmother came to the United States.

• The year you were born will correspond to zero on the number line.

• The dates after your birth will be positive numbers

• The years before your birth will represent negative numbers, according to how many years before your birth they were.

For example, if you were born in 1993, that would be zero. If your brother was born in 1995, that would be 2 on your number line. Your mother’s birth in 1958 would correspond to –35 on the number line because it was 35 years before your birth. Ignore the fact that she may have only been 34 years old when you were born. We’re only interested in the years matching up.

When is the project due?

This project has been handed out on Thursday, August 28th and will be due Wednesday, September 10th.

What do I need to do to receive the most points possible?

• You need to find 5 events that occurred prior to your birth. Since these events happened before you were born, they will be your negative events. On the number line, you need to label both the year that they happened and a number that corresponds to the year.

• You need to find one event that has happened each year since your birth. (For example if you are 12 years old you need 12 events). Since these events happened after you were born, they will be your positive events. On the number line, you need to label both the year that they happened and a number that corresponds to the year.

• You need to include your birth on your timeline. This will be the zero on your timeline. Please label it with a “0” as well as the year.

• Each event on your number line needs a picture, drawing, or clipart.

How do I figure out what number corresponds to the year?

• To figure out which number to assign to the year, start at your birth, “0”. If you were born in 1998, that would be your “0”. If something happened in 1995, that was 3 years BEFORE you were born, so it should have a (–3). If something happened in 2000, that was 2 years after you were born, so it should be a (+2).

How should my timeline look?

• Your timeline should be very neat. I will NOT accept a piece of notebook paper turned in with pencil writing. Put some time into this project.

• Remember that this is a number line, therefore, you should have a line for every number. You need only to plot the numbers for which you have corresponding events and years.

• You can do you number line on regular 8.5x11 paper taped together, poster paper, butcher paper or anything else that will make the presentation nice.

How much is this project worth?

This project will be worth a total of 50 points. Make sure your work is accurate and well presented.
