Youngstown City Schools

In a recent report from the Youngstown City Schools, the following is the result of the vision program spearheaded by Sight for All United in 2016 to ensure children in Youngstown received needed vision services. Through a collaboration between the Youngstown City School District, Sight for All United, the Essilor Foundation, Classic Optical, and the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, children received a basic vision screening, and, if needed, received a follow up examination for potential corrective lenses. If the follow up exam indicated the need for corrective lenses, the children were fitted for, and receive, two pairs of glasses.

As compared to other students, children who were prescribed glasses:

Had a 2.5% higher average attendance rate Had a 41% lower discipline referral

Had a 7% higher pass rate for the State English Language Arts end-of-year assessment

Had a 6% higher pass rate for the State Math end-of- year assessment

Had a 13% higher NWEA Reading Winter-To-Spring RIT Score average growth

Had a 25% higher NWEA Math Winter-To-Spring RIT Score average growth

Had a 6% higher pass rate on the Third-Grade Reading Guarantee (TGRG)

This Vision program has provided a significant benefit to its program participants. On average, the students who were prescribed glasses showed an increase attendance rate, a decreased discipline referral rate, an increased proficiency rate on AIR tests, and an increase in growth on NWEA benchmark assessments.

This was all done with an absolute minimum cost to the district, thanks to very generous partnerships with Sight for All, The United Way, Classic Optical, the Essilor Vision Foundation, as well as countless volunteers.

"As an educator, it amazes me the number of kids that cannot see! Sight for All United allowed my son to have an extra pair of glasses for emergencies. (He) is diagnosed with autism and it helps to have an extra pair on hand."

- Asher

In their words...

"Thank you does not seem to be enough to say. There truly are no words that are enough for what your organization has done for me. You have given me back my sight. And it is better than ever! I am truly amazed each and every day at what I can now see that I was not able to see before. You have given my life back to me. I can drive with confidence, see my kids faces. It is a miracle, and to think just a few months ago, I was looking at filing disability due to my sight. Thank you so much." - Nancy

"SFA provided funding to have a cross-linking procedure done to preserve (Emily's) eyesight. The procedure guaranteed her current vision was preserved instead of waiting years for it to get worse, which could result in corneal transplant. Without the help from Sight for All, (Emily) would have had to wait for the procedure. You have truly been a blessing by helping us. And because of that we can rest a little easier knowing her sight has been preserved. Thank You." The Family of Emily (16)
