National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Research Indicating Effectiveness

of

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification

• Research shows that National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) use more effective teaching strategies than teachers who do not hold the prestigious credential (Arlington, VA).

• Student assessments used by teachers who have achieved National Board Certification yielded results that were more closely tied to learning goals than the work of non-NBCTs. (NBPTS, 2005)

• National Board Standards provide a consistent focus on the use of classroom assessment – “These consistencies strongly indicated a vision of classroom assessment that emphasizes the use of assessment to promote student learning rather than just as a means of recording the status of student learning.” (“Investigating the Classroom Assessment Literacy of National Board Certified Teachers,” NC).

• NBCTs develop and implement instructional plans and assignments aimed at fostering deeper student understanding. According to researchers from Appalachian State University, students taught by NBCTs achieved deeper learning than students on non-board certified teachers.

• There was a statistically significant difference between the depth of student learning of NBCTs and teachers who had attempted but did not achieve certification (NBPTS).

• Research found that students of NBCTs did a measurably better job than other ninth and tenth graders on year-end math tests in Miami-Dade County (FL) Public Schools. All else being equal, teachers who had achieved National Board Certification helped their students achieve larger testing gains than did colleagues without the certification (The CAN Corporation, Nov. 2004).

• Students of NBCTs experienced year-end testing improvements that averaged 7 percent to 15 percent more than peers whose teachers were not NBCTs (University of Washington and the Urban Institute, March 2004).

• “Research confirms that increasing the number of teachers who earn National Board Certification will have a direct impact on raising student achievement in schools across the country. Business leaders realize that the future of America depends on the quality of education our children are receiving. That is why State Farm is committed to supporting National Board Certification” (Edward B. Rust, Jr., Chairman and CEO, State Farm)

• “This study adds to the body of evidence that professional development, in this case National Board Certification, improves teacher effectiveness and therefore student achievement. Everything we do should be done with an eye towards improved student achievement, which is why I plan to help grow the number of AZ teachers who are National Board Certified,” (Gov. Janet Napolitano, AZ).

• “The Arizona State University study adds to the growing body of data that indicates a strong link between National Board Certification and student achievement. It affirms the importance of accelerated state and local investments in Board certification. Our children deserve no less as they aspire to higher and higher performance standards,” (Milton Godlberg, Former Executive VP, National Alliance of Business).
