-685800-22860000 A CHILD’S UNDERSTANDING A United Methodist bishop tells about the time his 5-year-old granddaughter followed along as the congregation stepped forward to receive Communion. When he asked her why she came to the Lord’s Table, she said she just wanted to say “Hi to Jesus.”≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ SIX NEW YEAR RESILUTIONS1. May all of you “tigers in the dark” turn out to be kittens in the light of God’s great love. --Dr. Thomas Lane ButtsTHE PRICE OF A PRETZEL A woman of modest means was selling pretzels while standing in front of a building in New York City. A businessman decided to help her out. He handed her the asking price of a dollar, smiled and went on without his pretzel. This became a morning ritual every day for three weeks. He gave her a dollar without taking a pretzel. Then onr day, the woman stopped him and said, “Excuse me, sir. May I have a word with you?” “Oh,” he replied, “I know what you’re going to say. You’re going to ask why I give you a dollar each day and never take a pretzel. Right?” “Not exactly,” she replied. “I just wanted to tell you that the price of my pretzels has gone up to a dollar-and-a-quarter.” Prices do go up, don’t they? Now that winter is here, and with energy prices rising, churches will likely pay more for heating. Missionaries are short of funds and supplies. Social services of the church (food pantries, shelter for homeless, helping poor pay medical bills, ets.) need volunteers and money. (Such as Community Ministries) We would do well to remember our Lord’s words, “I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:35-36). “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of those who are members of my family, you did it to me” (Matthew 24:40). Yes, if the price of pretzels has gone up, the needs of the church should be considered as well.≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈QUOTESA sick man, facing death, said to his pastor,“I am well. For we have seen His star in its rising and have come to worship Him.’” – Matthew 2: 1, 2Bethlehem. Its name means “the House of Bread”, and it sits in a fertile country side, which makes its name fitting. It sits upon a grey limestone ridge more than two thousand five hundred feet high. It had two high ridges at each end and a hollow like a saddle between them, giving it the appearance of an amphitheater of hills around the little town.Bethlehem had a long history even before the O holy night. It was here that Jacob buried Rachel and set up a pillar in her memory (Genesis 48: 7; 35:20). It was here that Ruth married Boaz (Ruth 1:22) and from Bethlehem she could see her homeland of Moab. But above all, It was the hometown of David (1 Samuel 16:1; 17:12; 20:6); and it was the well of Bethlehem that David longed for when he was a hunted fugitive upon the hills (2 Samuel 23: 14,15).In the hearts and minds of the people of Israel, Bethlehem was the City of David. It would be from David’s line that God would send them a great deliverer for his people. As the prophet Micah had it, “O Bethlehem Ephratah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who to be ruler in Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” (Micah 5:2)And it was so. *1As we remember and sing to the “Little Town of Bethlehem”, we often envision a small barn, some animals, and an angelic child surrounded by his adoring parents, a few shepherds and three kings. But, it was more like a limestone cave, a dirt floor, two exhausted parents, and a group of frightened shepherds from the field. (The kings hadn’t even arrived yet). And a child, very much like our own, cold and wrapped in pieces of cloths, lying in a feed trough. But from the moment He was born in that small, overcrowded town, under a new star, the world would be changed forever. For God had come to live among us, and the glory of heaven would be revealed in his humble arrival. Jesus opens the eyes of our hearts and minds so that we can see the truth of God for us; to see who God is and who we are supposed to be. Because of Jesus, we are released from the power of sin and death, and so it is fitting that we should all bow down and worship him as the wise men did so long ago. For born to us in the City of David is our Savior who longs to be re-born in your heart if we accept Him as the Lord of your life.God bless all of you and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Pastor Steve *1. Sherry Grote, youth director ???9Pastor’s Report November 21, 2017 Since our last meeting I have been dealing with a very emotional period for myself, the church and for my family. But I have trust in my God and in my Savior Jesus Christ. I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to see us through the storms. Starting with the announcement that we were extremely in the rears when it came to our church finances, I, along with Randy and the members of the finance committee took action to try and right our listing ship. I applied for a grant from the Annual Conference and received for us $4100.00 to help us get caught up in the back payments toward hospitalization and pension. Beverly took up a few fundraisers by selling Signature Homestyle candles, Premier Jewelry and using the leftovers from the Chicken and Biscuit dinner to make chicken pies and pierogis, bringing in $2600.00. We also had the Chicken Biscuit dinner that netted for the church around $900. The 55 and over dinners allowed them to give a gift of $300.00 to the general fund. Along with an appeal from the finance committee to the congregation and a group of people who are dedicating themselves in prayer for those who have been absent from the church has seen an upturn in giving and in a response from those we have been praying for. Because of these efforts, we have caught up our back payments to the conference board of benefits and starting to see a turn for the better, without using the grant we received from the conference. God is good, and we are blessed because He pulled us together in our time of distress, Praise God. We also had our Charge Conference on October 24th and we’re treated to the musical talents of our new DS Bob Zilhaver. Actions and minutes of this meeting can be found in the church office. He did direct the PPRC committee to give him a bottom line number for a pastor’s salary in the case he needs to realign the charge or move in a different pastor. At a follow up meeting, the PPRC decided to hold off giving him that number until the end of the year to see how our finances recover. Other cost cutting efforts were suggested at the meeting but placed on hold until we meet in January. I have attended dCOM meetings, CACM board meetings, a meeting of the Elders, education meetings and gatherings of the Mountain Ministeriam. I have conducted Bible Studies, a book study, been on visitations and conducted a funeral. For fun we have had a bon fire, a Fall Fest at Pleasant Hill and last week we had a spaghetti dinner and watched the movie “The Case for Christ.” We also had a soup sale here at the church that collected nearly $600.00. Our Youth will be putting on a play for the Hanging of the Greens on December 2nd . I am presently working on tomorrow night’s Thanksgiving Eve Service as well as preparing for Patricia Karfelt’s funeral next Sunday. We continue to be a loving and active church that is in the service of our Lord and King, Jesus Christ. Christmas is coming, only one month of shopping left. Take a breath, and most of all, celebrate Emmanuel.Pastor Steven Lamb DECEMBER 2017=====================================================================SMT WTFS_____________________________________________________________________________ 1 2OFFICE HOURSSat.
