Stephen Fry In America: Mountains And Plains

Sunday, 30 August 2009

Starting with the airborne border patrol agents at the Canadian border in the stunning mountains of Montana, and ending at the

very different border with Mexico in Texas, Stephen explores the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains and America’s breadbasket

beside them.

He meets media mogul Ted Turner and some of his 50,000 bison; encounters Wyoming ranchers who have particularly close encounters

with wolves and bears; rides through the snow on a dogsled; overdoses on carbohydrates at a German diner in Bismarck, North

Dakota, and experiences the Badlands of South Dakota.

A ride with a trucker in Nebraska takes Stephen into the bizarre home of some Kansans in an underground missile base. Posh Aspen

in Colorado is in contrast with a Salvation Army belly dancer in Oklahoma, while a gala dinner in Houston is a far cry from a

band of Texmex musicians at the border in El Paso.

Midsomer Murders: The Black Book

Sunday, 30 August 2009

John Nettles and Jason Hughes are back investigating deadly deeds and gruesome goings-on in a brand new series of Midsomer

Murders.

In episode two, The Black Book, esteemed Midsomer artist, Henry Hogson, is at the centre of a case of art fraud and art theft

which leads - inevitably - to murder.

When Felicity Law, an elderly woman in one of the quiet Midsomer villages, discovers a painting in her attic and sells it at

auction as an original Hogson for an unprecedented sum, eyebrows are raised when she donates her entire profits to the local

Simms School of Art. But the plot thickens when Felicity is found tortured and strangled in her own home on the night of the

auction.

Inspector Barnaby is on the case, questioning Matilda Simms - head of the Simms School of Art - to uncover why Felicity might

have donated all the proceeds from her painting’s sale to the art school. Barnaby discovers that in her youth, Felicity had had

an affair with Matilda’s father, who was himself an artist and the founder of the Simms School of Art. Because of this

connection she has become the school’s benefactor.

Meanwhile, Barnaby becomes an amateur art historian when he researches the content of Felicity’s auctioned painting to find out

if it is genuine. He thinks he may have discovered just the tip of an art fraud iceberg. It soon becomes clear that a book

recording Hogson forgeries called ‘The Black Book’ is central to the murders, and that those who seemed the most innocent have

actually been hiding dark secrets all along.

Ashes To Ashes

Monday, 31 August 2009

When a dead body is discovered at a warehouse, DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) is quick to dismiss the death of Martin Kennedy

as suicide. However, with signs of a struggle and a massive blow to the head of the body, the CID team finds itself involved in

a murder investigation.

Feisty DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) soon uncovers an intriguing piece of evidence: a piece of paper with a code. Leaving Custody

Sergeant Viv with the task of solving the puzzle, Gene and the rest of the team head out to do the ‘real work’.

The investigation leads the team to a feminist socialist group, the Revolutionary Workers Front (RWF). It’s not long before Gene

has every woman involved in the group carted down to the station. Chris (Marshall Lancaster), meanwhile, tries to impress Shaz

(Monserrat Lombard) with his new-found feminist knowledge and Ray (Dean Andrews) is off on a date with a blonde communist.

Then Viv cracks the code and the evidence starts to fit together. It seems that Kennedy had been stealing information about a

nuclear weapons programme, ARTIMIS, from a secret Government facility called Edgehampton, and supplying them to the leader of

the RWF.

Things get even murkier when Alex’s mother, Caroline, is drawn into the investigation. Kennedy has some incriminating photos of

her, which puts Caroline firmly in the frame as a suspect in Gene’s eyes.

Later, a fake security pass gets Gene and Alex inside Edgehampton. A close shave with security leaves them locked inside a vault

with no light or fresh air and the temperature rising. As Gene and Alex face up to the reality of their situation, their

undeniable chemistry threatens to boil over…

Finding The Fallen: Codename "Tank"

Tuesday, 1 September 2009

Under top secrecy in England during WWI, a team of women were employed to help create mobile water storage devices for the

Middle East. They were actually building ‘landships’ but their nickname for these large steel machines, ‘tank’, has stuck.

These British metal beasts became a fearsome modern weapon that stunned Germany in the Great War as they rolled out to battle on

the Western Front.

In peaceful French woods, close to the site of the first effective tank battle, the trench detectives discover the shattered

remnants of one.

It had been destroyed in November 1917 at the Battle of Cambrai. The team traces its identity - it’s a tank known by the serial

number ‘F6’.

What emerges is a fascinating story of a machine, a man and some passionate and eccentric fans of the tank today.

Tony Robinson's Crime And Punishment: Have I Got Noose For You

Tuesday, 1 September 2009 Final

In this final episode, Tony examines the huge escalation in the amount of law making with the rise of industrialised society in

the 18th century. And with thinkers such as Voltaire, Locke and especially Jeremy Bentham - the man who called for a proper

democracy - the modern ideas of prison reform and rehabilitation for offenders begin to emerge.

Tony relives the theatre of public executions, explains how shocking factory conditions brought the UK to the brink of anarchy

until the law stepped in, and how men and women finally won the right to vote.

And he tells us about the introduction of the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829 which established London’s police force - the

world’s first professional police force.

Australia's Heritage: National Treasures: Wattie Creek

Thursday, 3 September 2009

Take a voyage of discovery with The Chaser’s Chris Taylor as he reveals the secrets behind a fascinating mix of treasures from

Australia’s National Heritage List.

Chris travels around Australia delivering historical snapshots of places from the National Heritage List. Established by the

Australian Government in 2004, the National Heritage List is a collection of places that contribute to Australia's national

identity.

In this mini-documentary series, Chris talks with experts and enthusiasts, revealing fascinating insights into our famous and

not-so-famous past. Visiting objects and places of significance, including Fremantle Prison and the ruins of the Dutch merchant

ship Batavia in Western Australia, the Eureka flag and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria, Francis De Groot’s sword in NSW

and the Naracoorte Caves Fossil Mammal site in South Australia, Chris Taylor’s enthusiasm shines a welcome spotlight on the

sometimes forgotten gems that are an irreplaceable part of our national story.

Wattie Creek entered Australian folklore as the birthplace of the Aboriginal land-rights movement when Prime Minister Gough

Whitlam visited the Gurindji people to grant them deeds to their land. The Gurindji rose to national prominence in 1966 when,

led by stockman Vincent Lingiari, 200 Aboriginal employees quit slave-labour conditions at Wave Hill cattle station and walked

the now National Heritage-listed Wave Hill Walk-off Route to set up a community at Wattie Creek, which they renamed Daguragu.

The walk-off began a nine-year labour strike that ended with a win for Indigenous land rights.

Black Wave: The Legacy Of The Exxon Valdez

Thursday, 3 September 2009

In the early hours of March 24, 1989 the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska, causing the worst

environmental disaster in North American history.

Millions of gallons of crude oil washed ashore. The oil industry was completely unprepared to respond to the spill. A thick

black tide rose and covered the beaches of once-pristine Prince William Sound.

For weeks dramatic images of dead seabirds and sea otters covered in oil screened across the world.

For 20 years the residents of the little town of Cordova waged the longest legal battle in U.S. history - against the world’s

most powerful oil company - ExxonMobil.

Black Wave, as well as documenting the poorly implemented cleanup and raucous town hall meetings, also examines the

environmental, social and economic consequences of the oil spill. It also charts the non-progress of the legal case that

followed and which changed lives forever.

George Gently: Gently With The Innocents

Friday, 4 September 2009 New Series

The death of a lonely old man in a dilapidated mansion takes Inspector George Gently and his partner Detective Sergeant John

Bacchus into a world beyond their initial comprehension and belief, on their beat in 1960s Northumberland.

As they dig into the history of the old house, they discover it was once a children’s home and evidence about the mysterious

death has to be re-examined as it is not as clean cut as previously believed.

A mute gardener is their prime murder suspect. He stayed on at the home after its closure to tend the grounds, but the behaviour

of everyone around, including property developer Cora Davidson, who paid over the odds for the old home to have it bulldozed, is

keeping the truth hidden.

Gently and Bacchus’s dark investigation draws on the changing attitudes of youth in the 60s as well as revealing hypocrisy in a

society that brushed unpleasant facts under the carpet rather than face responsibility for them.

East Of Everything: Community Chest

Saturday, 5 September 2009 Final

Terry Adams’s (Steve Bisley) lost ‘nest-egg’ continues washing up on Broken Bay’s beaches and after a punch up in the surf, Art

(Richard Roxburgh) and Vance (Tom Long) score some waterlogged cash.

Gerry (Nick Tate) feigns illness in order to stay in hospital – until Matron calls in Art and Vance who, given no choice, take

him back. Vance reveals Gerry's claim on the Far Out East to Art, but an embarrassed Gerry embarks on a mission to redeem

himself.

Eve (Susie Porter) is utterly devastated by her bad call with Carter, Evagreen, and the subsequent listing of the Palm Valley

site as a residential sale. Now unemployed, and looking after the bookshop, Art comes to her rescue, helping her form a strategy

using a loophole in conservation law.

Art - humiliating himself publicly in an ultimate act of love – joins Eve to stage their own demo outside of council, but they

are soon joined by the entire crew lead by a nude Gerry. The Mayor is bamboozled into a pre-sale agreement for the town to buy

the land.

With only a few days to raise the $300,000 deposit to secure the purchase of the land, Bev’s (Valerie Bader) brainchild is to

stage a dance-athon - thus promoting the Poinciana Dance Academy and mobilising the community behind the Palm Valley cause. As

the dancing begins, helped by a live broadcast on Bay FM, large sums of money people found in the surf start to appear in the

form of donations.

Meanwhile, Gerry comes across a report in the local paper that his friend, Rick, is in fact the ‘lost at sea’ Terry Adams who

suffered ‘memory loss’, but has now rejoined his family. Gerry, in his guise of Sadhu the holy man, pays Terry a visit in order

to cleanse Terry’s soul and get his hands on the remaining loot.

As the Mayor prepares to close down the dance-athon before the target is reached, Gerry arrives to save the day - thus cementing

his acceptance as a permanent part of the Far Out East. As the lights go out with them all under the same roof once more, Gerry

surprises them all with news of yet another estranged Watkins family member.

Double Time

Saturday, 5 September 2009

A mapcap UK drama which revolves around the similar likeness between a struggling insecure actor and an erudite, hardened

criminal. George McCabe (James Dreyfus) is an infamous career criminal to be respected and feared in equal measure. After being

arrested by police for armed diamond robbery, he currently resides at a maximum security prison.

Lawrence Nixon (James Dreyfus) is a struggling actor; the only thing he has going for him is the fact that he is the spitting

image, a real ‘doppelganger’ for McCabe. The result: Lawrence’s big acting break starring in a TV reconstruction of McCabe’s

notorious downfall. The trouble is Lawrence’s acting ability is sadly lacking, so in a desperate attempt to breathe life - if

not accuracy - into his portrayal of McCabe, he unwisely embellishes his performance with a menacing lisp and a camp walk.

Inside the prison the real McCabe becomes a laughing stock, and vows revenge on Lawrence.

The perfect opportunity presents itself when McCabe discovers that his beloved girlfriend, Cassie, is about to publish an exposé

book about his life which for him would mean certain death. Desperate to get out and stop her, he realises that having a

look-a-like could work to his advantage. Lawrence is kidnapped and left no choice but to temporarily swap lives with McCabe. The

swap is a success but no one could predict the life changing effects this unlikely switch has on the two men - it seems they

have much more in common than either would ever have dreamt...

Talking Heads: David Hobson

Can you become a star without really trying? Australian tenor David Hobson comes closer to this description than most of Peter Thompson’s guests on Talking Heads.

Hobson is well known for singing in numerous operas and Carols in the Domain, and for his platinum-selling popular hits. But his meteoric rise to fame surprised many, not least himself. Hobson had planned to compose songs, not sing them, but a fateful event in his early twenties dramatically diverted his career path.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the latest contemporary creations from a new generation of inventors, innovators and designers. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: surgeon and inventor Professor Fiona Wood, agricultural scientist Chris Russell, and designer Alison Page. Inventions featured on the program:

MYCROLAB – by inventor Micah Atkin from VIC. Medical tests on blood, urine or sputum normally take hours or even days to get results back. While this is a mere inconvenience for us, it is a life-threatening problem in developing nations where people have travelled long distances to have the tests done. Because of the time and distance between the lab and sample collection point, many wait for weeks or never get their results back at all. In the meantime, their condition worsens, they may infect others and the cost of their treatment increases.

MycroLab is a miniature laboratory that can perform multiple tests on a drop of blood, urine or sputum. The handheld system is designed so that unskilled users can produce laboratory quality results on the spot, for a fraction of the cost of conventional tests. The user places a specific card into the device and adds a drop of the fluid to be tested. This tiny sample is pumped around the device, where it interacts with reagents on the card in a tightly controlled and miniaturised version of laboratory testing. This technology will greatly improve the opportunities for people in impoverished and remote areas to receive the diagnosis and medical care they need. Mycrolab will put world quality testing into the hands of anyone, anywhere, with minimal training and a low cost.

SYNCRO MULTI EYES – by inventor Jos Hahn from QLD. Blind spots are a very common and serious risk when driving. These blind spots can block out around 30 per cent of a motorist's view of the road, and poor driver vision contributes to at least 12,000 collisions across the country each year. Alarmingly, every week in Australia a child is run over in the driveway of their own home. Syncro Multi Eyes is a camera system to enhance visibility for road vehicles. Between three and five miniature, high quality cameras are installed on a vehicle. A monitor is mounted in the dashboard and the camera view is controlled by a quick toggle of the indicator stick, giving you perfect vision of every angle, from an easy to use movement. The invention could have a broad potential market in trucks and vans, where blind spots are magnified.

SPIRO WRAPPER – by inventor Ashley Iles from VIC. Spiral wrap is used to protect hydraulic hoses from wear, abrasion, and deep cuts that can cause premature failure. Manually applying it is a slow, repetitive process that can cause painful repetitive strain injuries. The Spiro Wrapper allows you to attach your hose to a drill and feed the spiral wrap over the hose in a quarter of the time of manual application, without the repetitive strain on your hands.

Catalyst

Dengue Mozzie

Northern Queensland recently suffered its worst dengue fever epidemic in 50 years. Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito that thrives in urban environments. When a traveller from another country arrives infected with the virus and a mozzie takes a bite, the virus take another step in its lethal lifecycle. Australians have been faced with dengue outbreaks for at least 130 years, but we may now be about to break the back of break-bone fever. New research, employing the bacteria, wolbachia, could blow the dengue mosquito out of the water. Dr Maryanne Demasi liberally applies insect repellent to brave the mozzies of Far North Queensland.

Photonic Chip

Each day more and more data strains the capacity of the internet network. The biggest bottlenecks can be found where data flies out from the fast undersea optic fibre cables and enters the slower electronic network, to be despatched to destinations across Australia. Fortunately the science of photonics promises to remove these bottlenecks and speed up the entire network by sending information with light rather than tardy little electrons. Researchers have figured out a way to make light switches – that is switches that use photons instead of electrons. It’s the perfect switch for all the data that arrives on our shores. Dr Paul Willis takes us for a ride at the speed of light on the information super-highway of the future.

Dr Tony Harding - Brain Man

Neuropathologist Dr Tony Harding understands the benefits of organ donation more than most. As a 25-year-old PhD student he succumbed to Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder which causes copper to build up in the liver and brain. Thanks to the generosity of a donor, Tony received a life-saving new liver and was the first person in Australia to undergo a transplant whilst in a coma. Today he co-ordinates a ‘bank’ where dead people’s brains are donated and stored for scientific research. The Australian Brain Bank Network provides researchers with brain tissue on which they can conduct analyses related to a wide range of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and motor neuron disease.
