Our mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, graduate from high school prepared for, and with access to college or career training.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LITERACY

BY 4TH GRADE, A CHILD SHOULD BE READING TO LEARN, NOT LEARNING TO READ.

Why is this important? If a child doesn't know how to read by 4th grade, he or she is 4 times more likely to drop out of high school, or be behind their peers for years to come. Promoting literacy in your home will inspire a love for learning and open up a world of new possibilities for your child.

TIPS TO PROMOTE LITERACY:

20 MINUTES

OF READING A DAY

Expands vocabulary

Builds early literacy skills

Improves academic performance

READ TOGETHER

Twenty minutes of reading a day expands a child's vocabulary, builds early literacy skills, and improves academic performance.

MAKE SPACE FOR READING & WRITING

Designate a place at home for reading and writing. It can be a table, a desk, a quiet space -- anywhere it's easy to focus on reading and homework.

VISIT THE LIBRARY

Frequent visits to the library help children discover what they like to read.

TURN OFF ELECTRONICS (PHONES/ GAMES/TV)

Limiting screen time means children have more opportunities to pick up a book.

CELEBRATE SUCCESS

Make sure to celebrate when your child spells a hard word, finishes a book, or writes their name for the first time!

?Por qu? es importante esto? Si un ni?o no sabe leer antes de 4.? grado, tiene 4 veces m?s probabilidades de abandonar la escuela secundaria o de estar retrasado respecto de sus compa?eros en los a?os venideros.

Fomentar la alfabetizaci?n en su casa inspirar? amor por el aprendizaje y abrir? un mundo de nuevas posibilidades para su hijo/a.
