Math Tips

All students can learn math skills just as they can learn to read and write.

Ask your child what he/she has learned in math at school.

Know that there isn't one "right way" to solve the problem.

Break the problem down into parts.

Put a handful of change on the table for counting and coin recognition.

Math is all around us!

A Message from the Administration Team

We would like to congratulate the students on their achievements on the recent Progress Report Cards. They are to celebrate their successes and focus on next steps in the coming term. Thank you to families for attending the interviews and working collaboratively with your child/ren and staff to ensure continued success for your child/ren. Please know term one report cards will be sent home on February 8th, 2019.

During the month of November, our Me to We Club and Social Committee hosted a gift card drive to support the Share the Joy program for local families in need at the holiday season. Many thanks to the students of the Me to We Club, Mrs Kornbluth and fellow staff members for organizing this charitable event. The gift card drive raised a total of $1281.72 in gift cards. We appreciate the support of the Great Lakes families and local businesses.

In December, grade 8 students from Mr. Hovius' and Mr. Walker's classes will lead the school in a celebration of the character value "Honesty". The assembly will be held on Thursday, December 20 at 9:25 am. All are welcome.

Our next School Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 21st at 6:30 pm. All parents/guardians are welcome.

We would like to thank Mrs. Zinn for her support during Mrs. Vokey's absence. Her leadership and contributions were most appreciated. Further, we would like to congratulate Mrs. Raybould on her recent success in the school board's vice-principal promotion process!

SCHOOL SUCCESS Our School Council hosted a movie night on November 22nd as a community family event and to raise additional funds for our IXL extension math program. Funds raised through this event, as well as our school move-a-thon held on October 31, totalled $3838.40. We would like to thank School Council and our school community for your support in these events. Math continues to be one of our primary School Success goals. The IXL math program is used to supplement other classroom math strategies. An important strategy used in the classroom to help students develop operational fluency is math games. Professional development for teaching staff this year will focus on deepening our work in utilizing math games through a developmental approach to support students' fluency with math facts.

Celebrating Faith and Culture Backgrounder December 2018

The Peel District School Board is a mosaic of many cultures and faiths from all over the world. To commemorate this diversity, the board recognizes special faith and culture days of our communities. December 2018 has several special faith and culture days to celebrate and remember: ___________________________________________________________________

December - Luut'aa and Little Spirit Moon in Indigenous

Luut'aa is observed by Nisga'a people of the Nass Valley in Northwest British Columbia to commemorate the winter season when the river freezes solid and the land sleeps as it gets blanketed in snow.

The twelfth moon is known as Little Spirit Moon by the Ojibwe. It is a period of healing in health and emotions. The positive energy helps in the relationships with family and friends.

December 2 - First Sunday of Advent in Christianity

The Western Christian church year begins with Advent which is also a time when Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. Advent begins on the Sunday closest to November 30 and lasts until Christmas Eve.
