Geometry Project - DBCS Mrs. Marshall

TRADING SPACES! GEOMETRY EDITION

Congratulations!! You and your friend have won the contest to create your own dream bedroom. Now you must draw it, trade it, and create it. In this project, you will be creating a poster sized drawing of your redecorated bedroom (two-dimensional) and a real room model (three-dimensional). This dream room will include everything and anything you desire. It will also include some of the geometrical shapes and solids we have been studying along with figuring out area, perimeter, and doing some simple math calculations. You will be the designer and the construction manager of this project.

PART I: FLOOR PLAN DRAWING

The first phase of your project will be to create a floor plan drawing of your bedroom. This drawing must be done on graph paper. Your room should be drawn to scale (i.e. 1 graph paper square = 1 ft) and include at least five pieces of furniture. Your scale should be located in the bottom right hand corner of the drawing. It must include distances, measurements, square footage and must also make allowances for windows and doors. You must include the height from the floor to ceiling next to the picture. Your drawing needs to be correctly completed in order for your partner to create your new room.

PART 2: AREA CALCULATIONS

The second half of your project is to redecorate your friend’s dream bedroom. Redecoration must include the following:

• Painting at least 2 walls, making allowances for doors/window (surface area)

• Carpeting or new floor covering. In most cases this involves some calculation of complex polygons. (area)

• Wall paper border (perimeter)

• At least one new piece of furniture

• Inclusion of three different shapes or angles. These could be artwork, or somehow incorporated into the painting or wallpaper.

• A budget of $1000, prices will require research and must be documented

You will need to produce clear calculations for each aspect of redecoration. Assume that all tools (brushes, hammer, etc) are provided; however, you will need to purchase all other supplies staying within your $1000 budget. You will need to document where you are purchasing supplies and how much it will cost you. You will need to remember to figure out the sales tax for what you purchase and most importantly stay within the budget.

PART 3: MODEL CREATION

The next portion of your project will take you into the third dimension. You will now create an open ceiling, 3-D model of your friend’s dream room. You may use a shoe box, styrofoam, cardboard, popsicle sticks, or anything of your choosing to create your model. Make it quality and creative. You may discuss themes with your partner to make sure that they will like their new space.

(Note: Your model must match your friend’s floor plan drawing!)

PART 4: POSTER AND PRESENTATION

Your project will be presented during class. You will need to bring in your model and create a poster size display of your work (use color and make it look appealing). On this poster you should include the original graph/scale drawing of your friend’s room, typed budget sheet with worked out calculations, and pictures of any new pieces of furniture or artwork. During the presentation, you may discuss any problems encountered, the theme of your redecoration, and how you stayed within your budget.

Take advantage of the many technological programs that may assist you with this project. There are numerous websites that can be used in helping create a 3D model as well as show the painting of your room.

HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE!!!
