Managing Today's Bookstore
The industry's only
Bookstores: a force for good
Bookstores are called "sanctuaries" for good reason ... people need safe spaces to feel better about themselves and our world.
Bookstores have also been agents for change ... for the better.
In this issue, let's explore the ways we can further develop - and promote our peaceful sense of place and the ways the store can help prompt civility, respect, and compassion.
Have a great summer!
change begins with intention.
Reviving Civility
two movements help affect change
There are efforts already spreading across the
comprehensive professional development program for booksellers
new to management
When you promote a bookseller to a management role or hire a manager from outside the book industry, your new manager needs a thorough understanding of the job.
With this 12 module selfstudy program, those new to management will:
Learn the job! Gain the big picture of the responsibilities and authority levels of the manager's role
Dive into the detail with strategies for managing bookstore operations, from buying and receiving to inventory management and vendor returns
Learn bookstore metrics and how to interpret financial reports to measure productivity and profitability
Hire, train, schedule, and lead staff to create a positive work environment
Receive an overview of ways to grow the business
country and the globe that you can support by incorporating them in your blogs, events, displays, and staff discussions ....
Both are non-partisan and inclusive.
The lack of respect and civility has been disturbing to most everyone as hateful language has turned to violence here and around the globe. Bestselling author Karen Armstrong (A History of God, The Battle for God, Holy War, Islam, Buddha, and The Great Transformation and memoirs, Through the Narrow Gate and The Spiral Staircase) won the 2008 TED Prize for her TED Talk, a wish for leaders to push for a more compassionate way of living.
The effort resulted in a carefully crafted Charter for Compassion, which more than 340 cities around the world have adopted.
Individuals, groups, businesses ... anyone can review and sign the Charter for Compassion here. Invite customers to sign the charter; some will be inspired to take the charter to your local officials and their schools and organizations.
Let's engage local officials, candidates for political offices, and the local media ...
The National Institute for Civil Discourse, an effort of the University of Arizona, with the mission of supporting civility on multiple levels has as its goals:
To elect officials capable of working to solve the big issues facing our country
A public that demands civil discourse as well as
through marketing and merchandising
Get tools to help you prioritize work and give attention to the most critical aspects of the job
Receive customizable files like an employee handbook, bookstore financial management dashboard, employment applications, buying budget spreadsheet and much, much more. Why "wing it" when you can
learn the best practices of retail management for bookstores.

Revive Civility invites individuals, political candidates, and members of the media to participate. The Institute provides tools for Americans to take solution-oriented actions that will help restore civility in our public elections.
considered thought, respectful conversation: booksellers as champions of civility.
"getting behind" a book
a model of holistic bookselling
We receive BookPeople's electronic newsletter and always enjoy seeing what is happening at this spirited, engaged bookstore. In a recent issue, we caught this feature, designed to promote an upcoming book and author they respect.
What's happening in this one feature: a chunky section of the newsletter is devoted to a
new release the colorful headline spotlights the author's name the photos speak volumes... the staff feels
passionately about this book the brief caption ties the piece to the upcoming
author appearance a linked box takes you to the event details you can bet there's a big display in a focal point
display in the bookstore
This newsletter feature shows how BookPeople coordinated buying, marketing, hand-selling and merchandising.

Tuck it!
finding room for customer seating
When people learn about our work with indie bookstores, they usually mention two things about their favorite stores that they truly value: shelftalkers and seating.
Yet space can make this challenging.
Ottomans are a perfect solution.
You can tuck them under a
look and feel of the store ... and finding a new owner when it's time to begin your next chapter, booksellers count on us, knowing we are devoted to supporting strong and stable, creative and vibrant indie bookstores.

table when not in use and customers can pull them out when they're ready to sit.
Ottomans come in lots of fun colors and fabrics, are available in a variety of sizes, and are affordable.
Frame-style chairs are also easy to tuck beside a table.
They're light and easy to move ... and can be used for event seating.
You'll find ladderback or simple frame chairs at flea markets and garage sales. Don't like the finish? Just give it a coat of paint to match your store's colors.
give customers places to sit while they rest, browse, and decide
what to read next.
Show & Sell
promoting local creators
From locally grown food to local authors, the localism movement has proven important to independent businesses and the economic vitality of communities.
How far does your store go beyond offering a "Local" or "Regional" section of books? Carrying a robust selection of locally created merchandise shows that we "walk the talk."
We ask customers to buy locally, so let's show them
