Thank you all for your generous support and friendship. Patty and I are extremely excited about this upcoming year and could not be more proud to serve together as your Commodore. I say it that way because aside from the official title, this endeavor is truly a partnership of not only the two of us but also an extended family of all of you. We know that our entire purpose of being a member of this Club is for the camaraderie, family and fun, and we intend to keep that as our guiding focus throughout the year.

We have many fun things planned this year and we hope by adding our own little spin to things will help to keep our Club relevant to current times while respecting those traditions that set us apart from so many Clubs.

The Officers' Ball is January 26 and is being slightly re-focused so that we can honor our Directors and Officers who volunteer their time, talents and treasures to this Club. Patty and I both hope that you will join us in celebrating in honor of these folks by joining us for what will be a wonderful evening of food, tradition, class, music and fun. The Dan Rafferty Band will be with us to provide jazz music during the beginning reception, then they will play the traditional Grand March and continuing on with non-stop music from a wide repertoire of rock and roll, blues, pop and swing guaranteed to keep everyone dancing all night. Add to that the gastronomic treats from our culinary department, the dresses and tails, and many Commodores and friends from area clubs and there will be something for everyone. You won't want to miss this one for sure! Invitations will be out soon.

The "winter rendezvous" will take us to the Big Easy, New Orleans on March 14-18, 2013. Connie Blair and Linda Heling are working together to organize a unique and crazy fun getaway. We will experience the best that NOLA has to offer and accommodations are available at the historic Inn on Bourbon, smack dab in the middle of French Quarter. Dining, music, shopping and lots of surprises await! Go to quickly to register and to receive the information of how to book your rooms before they are gone. Did I fail to mention that this includes St. Patrick's Day which is the second biggest party in NOLA? Don't wait, sign up today!

Our Club will once again be open all winter long and although the bar and restaurant will have special hours and menus, we will be there and also have some special events whenever possible.

SCUBA DIVING AT THE DYC!

Winter is here and our thoughts move towards skiing up north, snow shoeing the island, and of course, scuba diving in the Keys and the Caribbean. Wintertime is the best time to learn to dive at the Detroit Yacht Club. I will be teaching an open water (beginner) scuba diving class starting on December 10th. This class will teach the student all the necessary skills and information to be a scuba diver. Students are still required to complete their five open water dives but this can be accomplished either on vacation or in the spring when the water in the Great Lakes region begins to warm up. Please send me an email at jamesloffredo@ if you are interested in joining the class. I can provide more detail on costs and where to find gear in the metro Detroit area.

Already certified as a scuba diver but it has been a while since you have been in the water? All training agencies encourage certified divers to stay current with their training. It is important, and easy, to stay up to date on the basic skills that are taught in the open water class. Please contact me if you would like to take a refresher class.

Nitrox classes. Once referred to as voodoo gas, nitrox or enriched air is a must for any diver over the age of 40. We are planning a nitrox class for Sunday, December 16th. Please send me an email if you are interested in participating.

The Detroit Yacht Club is a great place to learn how to scuba dive. We are able to offer scuba diving lessons at a reduced rate for DYC members. All DYC divers, if you are already certified please let Jim Neumann, Greg Nowak or myself know so we can add you to our roster of certified divers. Annual Winter Solstice

Celebration

Sunday, December 16th

Please join us for the Annual Winter Solstice Celebration on Sunday, December 16th. A roaring fire will greet celebrants who gather at the head of West End Dock at 4:00 pm to watch the sunset .

Marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The celebration has also served as a religious celebration for centuries. At the DYC, we gather to celebrate the sunset with friends, and think of spring when the harbor will again be filled with boats.

Mark your calendars - rain or shine, warm or cold - you will find a group of DYC members at the end of the island. Bring your own beverage and an appetizer to share.

BRINGING UP THE REAR

REAR COM. FRED CARR

With your support, I am moving from Bringing up the Rear to being smack dab in the Middle, thanks for your vote! However, first as the previous Finance Committee Chairman, I want to acknowledge the work of last year's team. With Treasurer Greg Nowak shouldering the brunt of the load during the four months we operated without a CFO his efforts kept our Club's finances on track and we all owe him a debt of gratitude, especially me, thanks Greg. In addition to Greg's efforts and countless hours, Director Daniel Nowicki, Director Joe Brooks, and Director Ronald Gmeiner's guidance, support and efforts proved to be invaluable to last year's success, thank you Directors. You know there are lots of "Middles" - Middle of the road, Middle Class, Middle Ages, and some "Mids" too - Midwife, Midlife, Midway, but the one I like the best is Amidships. Rudder amidships means the vessel is going straight, the most important cargo, aka treasure, was housed amidships where it could best be preserved and protected, two worthy goals for this next year. As Chairman of the House Committee and on behalf of it, our intention is to continue straight and true ahead, preserving and protecting our historic and treasured clubhouse. To do that this year are Director Erica Ciupak as Board Secretary, Director Pete Dryovage, Director Todd Eib, Director Howard Trerice, and Commodore Bryan Barlow. As in previous years, the Board's email address is secretary@ which provides you with an electronic means of having your communication officially included in a Board meeting. There is also the tried and true pen and paper version addressed to the Board in care of the Secretary whose mailbox is in the Club's General Office. I mention methods of communication in support of our committee's third goal, keeping our membership informed. As we hear from you, you'll hear from us, your 2013 Board via the Secretary's Mainsheet articles. On to the House and what a beautiful House she is all decorated up in her Seasonal Attire, sparkling and gleaming from every facet she has. of Club decorating, and Commodore's Coffee made for another great weekend in the House. Being with members, working together bringing out and putting up decorations provides great opportunity for camaraderie to begin and flourish. And so it did, led by Decorating Committee Chairwoman, Colleen Donnelly whose five-year tenure proved invaluable to creating that very environment. Five years is a long time and Colleen has decided to take a welldeserved respite; giving her successor Mary Ann Motyka a turn at the helm. Thank you from all of us Colleen, a job well done! Traditionally prior to the Commodore's Coffee there is a group meeting of all the Committee Chairs in the Trophy Room. This year, led by Commodore Allen, the meeting reviews Club policy and procedure, old hat for some and new information for others, helping committee chairs work with the Club to run their events. Chairing a committee is very enjoyable and exciting as it directly affects the successfulness of our Club. In preparation, Mary Ann worked closely with Colleen this year to make sure next year's decorating event comes off without a hitch. There is no time like the present to plan for the future, so if you're interested in committee work, let us know now and we'll get you started down that path! Look for the new committee chair listing in the Main Sheet, then pick something you like and give a call to join in on the fun. Former Director and Board Secretary Jim Gierlach is staying engaged working the veranda stair renovation project along with Commodore Allen and member John Gelle who's also working on the Bitter End project. Jim's keeping a very close eye on the water levels too. Jim's interest in the harbor goes well beyond the docks he helped with last year; you could say it goes all the way to the bottom which unfortunately is a bit closer than we would like. In preparation for dredging, core samples have been sent to a lab and harbor soundings are being taken to map our contours. Look for updates from Jim on both as progress warrants. Thank you for a great job as Director and Board Secretary last year Jim. And that's the way it is from Amidships!

My fellow DYC members

As your new Treasurer for the fiscal 2013 year, I look forward to working with the Board on your behalf to ensure we finish the fiscal year in a stronger financial position than when we started. You have my commitment that we will work hard to make that a reality.

The most immediate challenge is the short term cash flow bind we are experiencing until the assessment billing for the months of October, November and December are collected in January. As we discussed in the annual meeting there is a need to catch up past due vendors in the next 30 days, which creates a timing issue. We are reaching out to our bank to increase the Line of Credit to better manage these timing differences.

In an effort to further improve the short term cash flow, we have offered a food and beverage credit if you prepay your dues. While this is a token discount and not meant to be the deal of the week, we encourage all members to consider pre-paying their dues and well fees in an effort to further alleviate the short term cash flow strain.

I look forward to the year ahead with optimism that we will continue to be able to move the Detroit Yacht Club forward in a positive manner. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

FINAL MONTH FOR 2012 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The Detroit Yacht Club Foundation's first year of operations is drawing to a close this month. We had a great time at our Restoring the Grandeur Gala on December 1. Thanks to all the members and guests who attended this event. One of the activities was placement of predictions about the DYC and the Foundation into a time capsule that will be opened in 10 years. It will be interesting to see how accurate our members' prognostications will be. Robin Heller did a fantastic job in leading the Gala planning team, and was assisted by nearly 25 other members and Foundation supporters. It was a busy time of the year, but these folks found the time to help with creative ideas and hard work. Thank you!

Late last month, you received a mailing from the Foundation asking you to consider a year-end tax-deductible donation and three-year pledge of contributions to our Seal the Envelope Capital Campaign. I'm happy to report that many members have already stepped up to help preserve and restore our grand clubhouse with generous contributions. The Gift Twice Given

The gift of a DYC Cookbook to a family member, relative, friend, coworker or as a thank you or a hostess gift, is a thoughtful way to remember someone and do something special for the DYC Gardens. The $25.00 that we receive for the book will be seen in one of the gardens next spring or summer. It may be used for a flat of wave petunias, a double knockout rose bush, some beautiful red geraniums or for something special to fill a pot at the main entrance or by the stairs at the boardwalk. Every dollar from the sale of each cookbook goes directly into the gardens. So think about it, if you have someone you think would enjoy a beautiful cookbook with over 500 recipes, give them a holiday wrapped book and know that you are helping DYC gardens grow. A sample copy of this book is at the Reception Counter. Browse through it to check out the recipes in it. Gift wrapped books and books in presentation boxes are available at the Reception Counter.

Holiday Celebrations

Take your DYC cookbook off the shelf and browse through the index in the back to gather ideas for things to make during the holidays be it for a dinner or just a small gathering of friends for cocktails, appetizers and desserts. There are so many delicious choices from cold and warm appetizers, great entrees, soups, salads and sides to lovely rich desserts and a wonderful assortment of Christmas treats in the cakes, cookies, pies and puddings sections. Don't forget about breakfast ideas found in the breads, muffins and egg recipes. As for holiday spirits, remember there are suggestions for great wine pairings and for several drinks. So revisit this cookbook and have fun cooking.
