Ask the Naturalist

Submitted by Heidi Anderson, Polk County Conservation

Q. Could you tell me about the migration of Canada geese? Some

one told me that some of the geese here don't migrate. I have lived here for years and always thought they did. Also, why do geese fly in V-formation?

A. There are 11 subspecies of Canada geese in North America and nearly all migrate. Canada geese

establish strong bonds with their young during the summer and will stay together for almost a year. The young learn the migration routes from their parents and follow the same route in subsequent years. They migrate together in flocks with other family units. However, it is not uncommon to see Canada geese in Iowa during the winter. Common or giant Canada geese will not migrate if they can find food and open water. Ponds in urban areas become good habitats for geese because of the lack of predators and amount of open space. Geese fly in a V-formation so they can see each other and it helps reduce wind resistance. Usually the most senior female goose is in the lead but the lead goose will change from time to time.
