Syd the Solstice Kid

Welcome to our new show!

Though many of us are celebrating holidays in December that are related to religion ? Christmas and Chanukah, for example ? for thousands of years people all over the world have celebrated the end of long, dark days and the return of light. We call this celebration Winter Solstice. Daylight begins to lengthen on or about December 21st. After that day, the sun rises earlier each day in the morning and the sun sets later in the evening.

Many different cultures have old stories explaining this transition from dark to light. We found four of them that were fun and interesting, and built them into our show. One story is from Scandinavia; one from northern Alaska and Greenland, from the people called the Inuit; one story is from China; and the last story is from the traveling !Kung San people from the Kalahari Desert in Africa.

These stories all explain the transition between long, dark days and the return of longer, light days ? sometimes in surprising ways!

Enjoy the show!

Now tell us with words about your favorite part!

StoryBook Theater is produced by Studio East Training for the Performing Arts, based in Kirkland. Studio East, now in its 26th season, works to create opportunities for young people to discover and explore the performing arts. StoryBook Theater serves this mission by introducing over 45,000 patrons each year to live theater for young audiences. We believe that exposing children to the arts at an early age fosters creativity, validates different ways of seeing the world, and demonstrates creative outlets for expressing emotions.

Studio East's many performing arts training programs ? after school and homeschool classes and workshops, productions and classes at area schools, school break and summer camps, and Mainstage productions ? focus on nurturing responsibility, creativity, and compassion in the youth of our community. We believe that young people who practice the discipline and dedication required by the art and craft of theater develop life skills that will serve them throughout their lives, no matter what career they pursue.
