Storytimes

These classes teach early literacy skills and a love of reading through age-appropriate stories, songs that develop vocabulary, and activities that expand your child's imagination.

Registration for Session 1 begins Monday, January 9. Session 2 registration begins Monday, February 27.

? Advance registration is required, except for Everybody Storytime, Saturday Stories Alive, and World Stories Alive.

? An adult must accompany each child.

? Siblings may attend, but parents are responsible for ensuring that they behave in an appropriate manner.

? Storytimes are limited to 20 children per session.

? You may choose to register for Toddler Learning Centre OR Tales for Twos storytime each session.

? Participants should arrive within 15 minutes of the start of the program to join activities.

Baby & Me Lapsit

Ages: Newborn to 14 months

Sweet stories, songs, and lapsit rhymes--a playtime just for baby and grown-up.

Session 1: Mondays, January 23 & 30; February 6 & 13 at 9:30am OR Wednesdays, January 25; February 1, 8, & 15 at 9:30am

Ages: 15 to 24 months

Sweet stories, songs, and lots of movement--a storytime for babies on the go and their grown-up.

A storytime for all ages! Interactive stories, fingerplays, and music.

World Stories Alive

Ages: 3 to 8

Experience stories, songs, and art in many languages. Fun for speakers of all languages, including English! 11am most Saturdays -- see inside back cover for specific dates and languages.

Saturday Stories Alive

Ages: 2 to 7

A half-hour of stories, fingerplays, and a craft, or movies, or a special performance. Participants should arrive within 15 minutes of the start of the program to join activities. 11am Saturdays -- see calendar for specific dates.

Learning Centre

Ages: 18 months to 3 years

Registration for Session 1 begins Wednesday, January 11. Session 2 registration begins Wednesday, March 1.

Join us in the Downsbrough Community Room - a place for you to play with your child and talk with other parents. Sessions limited to 12 families.

Session 1: Tuesdays, January 24 & 31; February 7, 14, & 21 at 9:15am OR 10:30am Session 2: Wednesdays, March 15 & 22; April 5, 12, & 19 at 9:15am OR 10:30am

You may choose to register for Toddler Learning Centre OR one Tales for Twos storytime each session.

Free Developmental Screenings

Ages: Newborn to 5 years

Curious about your child's developmental progress? Evaluations are administered by certified therapists from local early intervention agencies. Fridays, February 3 and April 7 from 9am-11:30am.

Skills will be evaluated in five major areas: ? motor (crawling, rolling,

walking, hand-eye coordination) ? social (attention span,

interactions, play) ? cognitive (thinking, reasoning) ? language (speech,

understanding, pronunciation of words) ? adaptive (eating, dressing, toileting)

No registration necessary, but children will be evaluated on a first come, first served basis.

Groups

Join Connie Schulz, SCASD Family Outreach Specialist, and community resource guides to meet other parents and share ideas.

? Childcare is available at no cost by Penn State student volunteers.

Parent Discussions

Tuesdays, January 24 & 31; February 7, 14, & 21: 12pm-1:30pm

Downsbrough Community Room

Topics Include: Building Resilient Kids; Kids, Chores, and Money; Stress Relief; Talking with Kids About Difficult Issues; and Dealing with Disrespectful Speech and Whining. For in-depth descriptions of each week's topic, please visit parentingdiscussions.

Registration may be made for one or more sessions of Parenting Discussions. Childcare is provided at no cost, but please make reservations one week prior to the date needed, or for the series by Tuesday, January 17.

Tuning In To Kids: Raising Emotionally Intelligent Children

Wednesdays, March 15, 22*; April 5, 12, & 19: 12pm-1:30pm

*Please note: We will skip March 29.

Downsbrough Community Room

Tantrums and meltdowns are tough to prevent and manage! This five-week program helps you to build and practice emotionally-responsive parenting skills. TIK-style parental interaction helps children learn to think about and manage their feelings. Program size is limited for effective discussion and practice. Topics include: Understanding Your Child's Emotional Experience; Problem-solving and Self-care for Caregivers; Emotion-coaching Your Child's Anger, and more!
