Dear Cherrywood Pointe Family ?

Happy Holidays! We had a wonderful and busy November, from forming new partnerships with Kinderberry Hill to all the holiday prep. I also wanted to take a moment and say thank you to all the residents who have volunteered their time to assist with activities or decorating. This is a crazy busy time of year, and I couldn't make it through it without all of you amazing people. I appreciate it more than you know.

Our December will be fun filled with lots of Christmas cheer with the variety of Christmas and holiday music we are hosting. We will also will have the opportunity to go on some really awesome outings to see all the holiday decorations around town. We hope that we help make your holiday season even more special this year. Chaplain Beth's Ponderings It's the most wonderful time of the year--With the kids jingle-belling And everyone telling you, `Be of good cheer'-- It's the most wonderful time of the year." ~ Wyle/

Pola

The songs play it. The movies portray it. Even our church

services have their part to play. "It's the most WONDERFUL time of the year!" Well, what if it isn't all wonderful? For many people, holidays bring up painful memories along side of the celebrations. Sore spots from our lifehistory or the loss of loved ones may hit hard during this sentimental season. It can be a bitter-sweet time of celebrating the joys of Christmastime while we can, at the same time, find ourselves connecting to places in our spirits where we carry our deepest sorrows.

During one of the most desperate times of King David's life, the anointed future king of Israel found himself running from two separate enemies--hardly a time to celebrate his anointing! With the Philistines to the west and King Saul to the east, a distressed David sought refuge in the cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1?2).

His situation offers encouragement to us during the difficulties of the holidays. David felt very alone, and as he let it all out to God, he also prayed, "When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, You knew my path. (Psalm 142:3) In Hebrew, the word You is emphatic, meaning only God truly understood David's pain. From the depths of the cave where he hid, David cried aloud, "You are my refuge" (Psalm 142:5). David's words illustrate the tension between anguish of soul and dependence on God.

Desperate aloneness often feels like a prison--as it did to David. But when we feel overwhelmed and lonely, we can remember that the Lord is present and is "intimately acquainted with all [our] ways" (Psalm 139:3). Regardless of how we feel, God promises He has not left us alone. He never will. Loneliness is God's call to draw near to Him.

Among the variety of holy celebrations and traditions of the world--Christmas (Christian); Hanukkah (Jewish); Bodhi Day (Buddhist); Kwanzaa (African-American/pan-African)--is the ancient Zoroastrian celebration of Yalda, which marks the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice takes place on December 21st, the longest night of the year. Following this date, daylight returns for more and more of each day until we reach the Summer Solstice on June 21st. In our community, we will hold a Blue Christmas service the week of the Winter Solstice, when we will gather to honor all of the feelings, including the difficult ones, which we experience with greater intensity during the holidays. This time of worship together allows these feelings to be expressed and honored. We come together as people of God to sing, pray, light candles of remembrance, and hear reassuring words from scripture to invite light into the dark places of our spirits. All who would find comfort in this gathering are invited to the Blue Christmas service on December 19th at 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

May you find peace, comfort, and companionship this holiday season and always, in the One who understands you completely. Hear the tidings of comfort and joy in the reassuring message of God's love entering this world in humble, human form, to fully understand all of the complexity that encompasses being human. Love came to bring light into our darkness... and to abide with us forever. This is the Prince of Peace--Immanuel--God with us.
