2018 NEWSLETTER WRITER

I've become a very nostalgic person since coming to college, especially in this season of turning 20 and finding my footing in what it means to be a young adult nearly halfway through undergrad (YIKES!). I often find myself thinking about where I was two or three years ago compared to right now, and today, over a warm mug of chai, I remembered that around this time in 2016, I had just received my first college acceptance-- and, as you may have guessed, it was from Belmont.

Just a quick synopsis of my college decision: I had no earthly idea where I wanted to go. All I knew was that I wanted to go to a smaller, liberal arts school in a big city. My heart craved all the noise and action I had grown up with living near downtown San Antonio, but my brain craved a tight-knit learning community, somewhere that would nourish my creativity and indulge the history nerd in me. Belmont hit everything on my checklist perfectly. Nashville is a thriving city; campus is small enough to feel tightknit, but big enough to have plenty of resources; plus, being in Honors, I knew I was going to be challenged.

The kicker: I had never visited, and with the whirlwind schedule in the last few months of my senior year, I knew we wouldn't have time before the universal deadline of May 1st. With my parents' blessing, we put down the enrollment deposit, and after two or three days of the initial excitement faded, I proceeded to freak out. A freak-out of astronomical proportions. The freak-out to end all freak-outs. What on Earth had I just done?

Later that month, I was on a plane to Nashville for Be Belmont Day. Spoiler alert: Belmont was, as I had secretly hoped mid-freak-out, absolutely perfect. Everything, as it tends to do, fell into place. So, since then, "blind faith" has been the theme of my Belmont experience and my Honors experience. Going through recruitment, staying up late studying for Medieval World, reaching out to new friends, exploring Nashville, deciding my thesis track: all acts of blind faith in varying shapes and sizes. As Honors students, we may have a clear-cut path in our heads of what incredible pursuits we're going to work towards: medicine, the Grammys, law, New York Times best sellers, doctorates, being the next Dr. Thorndike--but as we approach the new year, fellow Honors folks, I encourage you to take those little leaps and skips of blind faith. As cheesy as it sounds, it's what got me here.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear friends,

With the end of the fall semester, I wanted to take the time to thank all the dedicated readers out there; this newsletter would be meaningless without you.

I also want to recognize my amazing newsletter team from the past year: Sadie Burrows, Calista Ginn, and Claire Kelly. They have been a wealth of ideas and inspiration, and none of this would be possible without them.

Starting in 2019, I will be carrying on my role as newsletter editor for a final year, with the help of a new team of newsletter writers: Kendall Crawford, Tess McNeely, and Alyssa Stephens.
