Have the students complete an open sort contrasting the short (CVC), long (VCe), long (oa), and long (oCC) words. Upon completion of the sort, emphasize the key points described below. Although this sort was designed to be an open sort, you may choose to add headers. You may also choose to direct students to sort by sound, pattern, or sound and pattern.

12.1 ? Easiest word list (Recommended for primary) 12.2- Average word list (Recommended for late primary /remedial intermediate) 12.3- Challenge word list (Recommended for intermediate)

Key Points: short o ? one vowel signals the short vowel sound- Closed syllable(CVC) o C e - / / vowel consonant e signals: a long vowel sound for the first vowel and a silent e sound at the end (CVCe) oa ? long sound (Discuss when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking) (CVVC) oCC- can make a long sound

The oCC pattern makes the long sound, as does the oa and oCe pattern. Notice that o can also make the short o sound when followed by two consonants. Exceptions (oddballs)- some, gone- children should note that these words do not follow the oCe long vowel pattern.
