SORTS FOR MIDDLE SYLLABLES AND AFFIXES

DIRECTIONS FOR VOWELS IN ACCENTED SYLLABLE

SORTS 9 -18

These sorts review common vowel patterns and introduces the role of accent in spelling. Students will learn that the accented syllable often has patterns they learned in the within word pattern stage. See Words Their Way for complete instructions about how to place students, how to conduct sorts, and for follow-up activities that will assure students practice for mastery. Chapter 2 describes assessment, Chapter 3 describes organizations and core activities and Chapter 7 describes the syllables and affixes stage in detail. Pretest: To determine how much students already know about the vowel patterns in two

syllable words, you may want to administer spell checks 20 and 21 using the Progress Monitoring/Goal Setting Forms available with other assessment resources at this website.

SA Sort 9. Long-a patterns in two syllable words

Go over any unfamiliar vocabulary and ask students what they notice about the words in the sort (they are all two syllable words and all have long a sounds in one syllable). Introduce the key words and underline the long-a patterns of ai, ay and a-e. Remind students of the vcv pattern in the word basic and underline the a. Students should be able to help you sort the rest of the words and find the oddball. As you check the sort, read down each column and emphasize the stressed syllable to introduce the idea of accent or stress. Sort the words again by whether the stress falls on the first or last syllable and ask students what they notice. The stressed syllable has the long-a sound (There may be some disagreement about words like detail but just put it in the oddballs if needed). Do not be too concerned if some students struggle to identify stress. They can simply sort by the patterns and whether the pattern is in the first or last syllable.

SA Sort 10. Long-e patterns in two syllable words

See directions for sort 9 as this sort works very much the same way except with patterns of long-e. When you sort by accent you will find that athlete is an oddball as the long-e pattern is not in the accented first syllable.

See directions for sort 9 as this sort works very much the same way except with patterns of long-i. Again, there may be some words that are not accented as expected like reptile.

This sort is similar to the sorts above and students can probably complete it independently.

SA Sort 13. Long-u patterns in two syllable words

This is similar to sorts above. Several words in this sort are accented on the syllable that does not have long-u. (July, curfew, mildew, nephew) Ask students to find them.

SA Sort 14. Diphthongs in Two Syllable Words: oy/oi and ou/ow

Go over any unfamiliar vocabulary and ask students what they notice about the words in the sort. (they are all two syllable words and two sounds). Introduce the key words, underline the

patterns, and talk about the sounds. Students should be able to help you sort the rest of the words and find the oddballs. There is no need to continue sorting by the accented syllable but the principles still apply ? the vowel sound is clearest in the accented syllable and is likely to be spelled with familiar patterns.

Students should be able to complete this sort independently but bring them together to go over any unfamiliar vocabulary and talk about the patterns.
