HAD BETTER

[Pages:1]HAD BETTER

We use had better to talk about the present or the future, but the form never changes. It's normally shortened into 'd better in informal situations. It's followed by the infinitive without to.

We use it to give advice about specific situations, not general ones.

It's time to go. I'd better go now before the traffic gets too bad. You'd better do what I say or else you will get into trouble. I'd better get back to work or my boss will be angry with me.

It is a strong expression. We use it if we think that there will be negative results if someone does not what is desired or suggested.

Negative form:

I'd better NOT tell her about the broken glass. She'll go crazy.

Question form:

Had I better speak to Joan first before I send this form off? Had we better leave a note for the delivery guy to take the parcel next door?

Negative questions are more common:

Hadn't we better ring the school and tell them Liam is sick? Hadn't you better turn your computer off? It might overheat if you leave it on.

SHOULD: Modal "should" is used for general situations:

You should brush your teeth before you go to bed. He shouldn't dress so casually for the office.
