Meandering Through Autumn: Maine to the Maritime Provinces

By Craig Idlebrook My daughter, Clara, and I have meandered our way throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island on several road trips. We've found that early fall is the perfect time for a northeastern drive into Canada, as the trip offers an early look at peak autumn colors, with maples and poplars showcasing crisper reds and oranges each hour traveled north. I've put together an autumn itinerary that encompasses some of our greatest hits of travel experiences for a family road trip to the Maritime Provinces. It starts in Bar Harbor, Maine, a seaside town that serves as a base camp to explore Acadia National Park. When Clara could still fit into a hiking pack, she and I walked many of Acadia's trails and often ended up at popular Sand Beach. While there, a drive up Cadillac Mountain offers the opportunity to spy the sunrise before the rest of the U.S., and sweeping views of the rocky islands in the Gulf of Maine.

Critter Crossings

By George Morse

Why did the chicken cross the road? Probably for the same reason as the deer, or the turtle, or the turkey, or the squirrel, or the chipmunk, or the possum, or the moose. Drivers share the road with a whole host of furry and feathered friends, sometimes with tragic results. Animal-vehicle collisions killed more than 5,300 people from 1975 through 2016, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Developing Lifelong Safe Drivers

As a parent of two grown children, I still remember when they each got a driver's license. I was happy for them and knew how excited they were about this new level of independence. I also felt the fear of letting them behind the wheel on their own.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. It's critical that parents be engaged in their teen's process of learning to drive safely, and you have an ally in AAA. For over 80 years, AAA has led the way in driver training and education programs.

At AAA, our driver training programs and instructors are influenced by the extensive research the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has done and will continue to do around teen driving, as well as distracted, drunken and drugged driving. Our goal is simple: to create lifelong safe drivers.

We offer a free pre-permit program for teens and parents, Dare to Prepare. This 90-minute program is designed for 14- to 15-year-olds and their parents. The objective is to initiate conversation between you and your teen about safe driving before the process even begins.

As you begin to think about formal driver training, AAA recommends using a qualified, professional driving instructor. AAA Driving School program offerings vary by state. They range from driver training curricula that include classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel instruction, in-car observation times, guest speakers and parent classes, to online defensive driving and traffic school courses created by professional instructors. All programs are licensed by state departments of motor vehicles.

In addition, AAA offers resources to guide parents through the process at our teen driver safety website: TeenDriving. . There you'll find specific information based on where you live and at what point in the process you and your teen are ? from preparing to drive through the learner's permit and solo driving.

Visit DrivingSchool for information on available programs.

Good Habits Start at Home

By George Morse

Like it or not, there are points in all of our lives when we realize we've adopted at least a few facets of our parents' personalities.

It could be a saying ("because I said so") or fashion choices (calf-high white socks with rad, white lawn-cutting sneakers).

It could also be traffic safety habits.

How parents carry themselves behind the wheel can influence how their children will behave years down the line. Here are a few tips from AAA's traffic safety and driver training pros on setting a good example.

Buckle Up

It's the law, and it could be the difference between life and death. Seat belts saved more than 14,600 lives in 2016, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Buckling up every time, even on short trips, is a good way to drive home the importance of this simple habit.

Eyes on the Road

It can be tough to tell your children to do as you say, not as you do, if they've watched you drive distracted throughout their childhood. Distract-

Parents are the best teachers when it comes to modeling good driving behavior and safety habits for their children.

ed driving claims thousands of lives every year, and it's about more than just cellphones. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research has found that drivers who use voice commands to do something as seemingly innocuous as changing the radio can suffer lingering mental distractions. Focus on driving with the hope your kids will do the same. Take It Easy Road rage is quite prevalent. About 80 percent of drivers expressed significant anger, aggression or road rage behind the wheel at least once in a 12-month period, according to AAA research. You can control your own emotions by remaining

tolerant and being forgiving of other drivers, and not responding to aggressive motorists. Avoid actions that could anger other drivers like creating a situation when they have to drastically change speed or direction. Leave Early Running late and speeding go hand in hand. Wherever you're going, try your best to leave far enough in advance to make it to your destination in time. Your children may well pick up on your smart planning and cautious driving practices. Get Enough Rest Many parents, especially those with young children, are forced to do a lot on just a little bit of sleep. Do your best to ensure driving isn't something you tackle in such a predicament. Drowsy driving is a hazard. AAA Foundation research found the percentage of crashes related to drowsiness is eight times greater than federal estimates. In addition, nearly 3 in 10 drivers have reported having a hard time keeping their eyes open behind the wheel at least once in the last month. Try to stem the exhaustion that accompanies parenthood by traveling at times of the day you're normally awake, shunning heavy foods and avoiding medications that cause drowsiness or other impairments.
