Resistors carrying large currents must be physically large so the heat can radiate quickly to the surrounding air. Demonstration: use a small (1/4 watt) and a larger (10 watt) resistor, both having a resistance of 10 ohms. The current through each resistor will be the same. Note the variation in heat given off by the two resistors.

A selection of standard value ¼ watt carbon film resistors ranging from a few ohms to a few mega ohms is required along with 10 kΩ and 100 kΩ potentiometers, .1 µF and .22 µF capacitors, and 1 mH and 10 mH inductors. A decade resistance box may also be useful. Each exercise begins with an Objective and a Theory Overview.

Jaycar stock 0.5 Watt metal film resistors, ¼ Watt and 1 Watt carbon film resistors and 5 and 10 Watt wire-wound resistors. Element 14 (formerly Farnell) and RS Components stock a much wider range of resistors but at a much higher price and they are ordered by mail-order adding to …

For components, a selection of standard value ¼ watt carbon film resistors ranging from a few ohms to a few mega ohms is required along with an array of typical capacitor values (film types recommended below 1 µF and aluminum electrolytics above). Specialty passives include a CdS cell, thermistor and a 20 Ohm 20 watt load resistor.
