John had baptized people with a baptism of repentance but now men were to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins (see Mk. 1:4-8). Peter had explained that water baptism accomplished a cleansing of the conscience (I Pet. 3:20-21).

Again, the faith here is comprehensive, saving faith, and that includes obedience (see notes on v16). Interestingly, the ASV even translates this verse in such a way as to demon-strate the true faith includes and requires obedience, exactly as we have explained on v16. This is both a great promise and a great warning.

For all believers are royal priests now, as Peter explained (1Pet2:5,9), as Book of Hebrews explained (main theme of the book): so John here reminds the reader of his PRIESTLY DUTY.
