The Stalemated Seventies
He told his door gunner to shoot the American troops if the attack on the civilians continued. Originally their superiors covered up the story. When it became public in 1969, it shocked Americans at home. Calley was given a life sentence - scapegoat, 20-year sentence, out after 3 years on good behavior.
