Using Dr. Hu’s function generator, I was able to generate a few functions to test on my RBF networks. I wanted to see if a certain type of RBF network would actually perform better in certain situations. The function generation output training and testing data for 3 functions, namely sinusoid, piecewise-linear and polynomial.

A polynomial is evaluated using the command polyval. If p is the vector of coefficients and x is the argument, polyval(p,x) or y=polyval(p,x) The roots command gives the roots of a polynomial, as elements of a vector. r=roots(p) If the roots of a polynomial are known, then the coefficient vector can be obtained by the poly command. p=poly(r)

This translates to using a ROM implementation to handle the table contents. But, if the code has cyclic properties, a generator matrix can be represented as a polynomial. Being able to describe a function in terms of a polynomials means that LSN’s can be used for implementation. This greatly reduces the complexity of the implementation.

When the x(i) are roots of a separable polynomial, D is called the discriminant of the polynomial, and is given by a universal formula in terms of the coefficients of the polynomial. If the ground field F has characteristic different from 2, the Galois group is a subgroup of An if and only if D is a square in F.

A.APR.3 Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a rough graph of the function defined by the polynomial. Use polynomial identities to solve problems. A.APR.4 Prove polynomial identities and use them to describe numerical relationships. For example, the polynomial identity (x2 + y2)2

Instructional Note: Extend work with quadratics to include the relationship between coefficients and roots and that once roots are known, a quadratic equation can be factored. Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function.
