Nov 04, 2012 · Arguments are exactly the same. Each argument type has to be structured appropriately. When an argument is structured correctly for that particular argument type, then we say that the argument is valid. Validity Δ= the quality of an argument when it is structured correctly. Of course, in real life, arguments come in the form of sentences.
On ‘Deduction’ and the Inductive/Deductive Distinction
This is the question on the “deductive” side of the inductive/deductive distinction. One automatically knows that if the argument form is valid, the argument is deductive, and one next need only inquire into the truth of the premises to determine whether there is sufficient warrant for the argument’s conclusion.

The paper that first defined construct validity (Cronbach & Meehl, 1955), presented a logical positivist framework “briefly and dogmatically” (p290) for its philosophical foundation, and attempted to show how the “logic of construct validation” was, in fact, a part of science. There were two problems with this.

Validity is a formal distinction, attending to its form, not its truth value. Soundness, on the other hand, deals with truth value. A sound argument has all true premises – thus, the first example is a sound argument, whereas the second isn’t.

People give arguments in order to defend, establish, prove, show, etc, that a particular claim, or central thesis is true. Very often, the argument which has that claim as its conclusion will also have one or more contentious premises. If the author recognizes this, she will typically defend those contentious premises with further arguments.

Validity is a function of logical form, not content: An argument is valid if and only if, if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. Now there are a number of basic argument forms that are valid and these can be combined into larger structures to make up long arguments.

In this argument the premises are false and the conclusion is false, but the argument has a valid form, (All A’s are B’s, All B’s are C’s, therefore all A’s are C’s) as there is no possible world in which the premises are all true and the conclusion is false. ii. A valid argument can have false premises and a true conclusion, for ...

The point of this activity is not to TEACH debate as a form; neither is it to TEACH speaking and listening standards. The point is to engage students in “argument” without the added cognitive complexity of having them write an argument, which they will do in the final part of this module. 1.
