      The translation of this passage is that of Rackham in the Loeb Classical Library edition of the Nicomachean Ethics. In Book III, the translator Ostwald renders sophrosýne as “self-control,” but this is not the way most translators translate this word. They and the standard ancient Greek dictionary give it as moderation or temperance.
