John enlisted just 6 weeks after the start of World War II signing up on the 16th October 1939 when the 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment embarked for France. John underwent training at the Lincolnshire Regiment Training Depot as Private 4804118. On the 11th March 1940 he joined the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France.
