INFORMATION FOR FOSTER CARERS KENNEL COUGH [pic]

No doubt as a foster carer you will come across some doggies that are unfortunate enough to contract Kennel Cough whilst in the pound environment. Here is a little bit of information to help alleviate any anxiety you have (as it sounds quite distressing) and help you identify the signs and symptoms.

What may start out as an occasional cough can end up sounding like a persistant hacking cough (the type little kids sometimes get and then they cough so hard they throw up, yuck)

Canine (Kennel) Cough

Canine Cough, also known as "Kennel Cough" is a disease complex caused by a variety of viruses and bacteria. It is not confined to kennels as the common name suggests, and it generally spread from dog to dog, in situations of close contact, including dog parks, the beach, vet clinics, kennels, and animal shelters.

The two most important causes of Canine Cough are considered to be the canine parainfluenza virus and the bacteria, Bordetella bronchiseptica.

This disease is typified by a persistent hacking cough. It is not usually fatal but it causes significant distress to the dog and owner. Some animals will stop eating and may become depressed and lethargic. Canine cough can be treated with antibiotics, nursing and rest, however, it is best to try to prevent the disease in the first instance.

It is possible that severely affected dogs may develop pneumonia as a consequence of contracting this disease. All dogs should be vaccinated annually to help prevent this disease.

In my experience kennel cough can last from 2 days to a week. A little honey or 1ml or 2ml of cough medicine can be quite soothing and offer some relief. This is fine as long as the dog still has bright clear eyes, is eating and drinking, tail wagging and looks healthy otherwise. Should the dog go off food and water, look lethargic or obtain a temperature then please phone a Starting Over Dog Representative and we will advise you where to seek medical attention as antibiotics may be required.
