Does anyone not like milk? o Even if you don't like drinking milk alone, you might prefer it in your cereal. o Drinking low-fat or fat-free milk can save fat calories and still give you the same amount of calcium. ? Is anyone here lactose intolerant? Have you tried soy milk or almond milk? o It could cause you to have an upset stomach if you are and drink or eat dairy foods. This is because you body cannot digest the lactose (sugars in milk) properly. o You could try lactose-free milk or soymilk. Even some yogurts are okay to try. ? Do you know what food group milk belongs to? Soymilk should have about 300 mg of Calcium. ? Does anyone know why it is important to eat or drink enough foods or beverages from the dairy group? o Because they all contain calcium! What is calcium needed for?

- Calcium is important for building strong bones and strong teeth. - Helps our muscles work so we can be active and play! o What other foods contain a high amount of calcium? (fortified orange juice and broccoli and dark, leafy greens)

B. Activities (20 minutes) ? Put up pictures of foods/beverages (some of which belong in the dairy group and ones that do not) and ask which ones belong in the dairy group. Then ask the students which food items contain calcium, but do not belong in the dairy group (broccoli, spinach) ?
