What is Jam?

Jams are made with crushed or chopped fruit plus the addition of sugar and pectin (and sometimes lemon juice). They have a spreadable gel perfect for complimenting toast, biscuits or even more creatively used as an ingredient in your favorite desserts. Look for creative use ideas at .

Q: What is pectin? A: Pectin is a natural, gelling ingredient derived from

apple and citrus fruits. When used in the preparation of homemade jams & jellies, pectin produces a more natural fresh fruit flavor and makes the process easier because less (or no) cooking is required to achieve a proper gel.

Q : Can I use a dif ferent type of pectin than what 's called for in the recipe?
